WEEKEND WRAP: 3/31/2017 - Friday, Saturday & Sunday - Goalkeepers Shut Things Down

Well, interesting weekend that was.......Scandinavia back in business, quite a few leagues go into post season competition for Euro places. 19 Countries had Americans playing this weekend !!!!! As has been prevalent lately its the young guns that seem to be out there performing (which is good for the future of US Football) this weekend, as well as goalkeepers who had more shut-outs than goals scored. The funniest is GK Bakary Sanyang, playing in Oberliga in Germany where yesterday his team won 22 - 0 (only in soccer) I wonder if he was awake by the end of the game?  3 teams in Iceland are in the League Cup Play-offs (3 of 8 spots) so that will be worth tracking.
When you read the breakdown of games/players you will see all the names, but injuries, back from Int'l duty, unused sub - seem to be a high level right now, still plenty of action to review.....

GOALS
Haji Wright - Germany
Danijal Brkovic - Bosnia

ASSISTS
Bobby Wood - Germany

SHUT OUT
Steve Clark - Denmark
Kenneth Kronholm - Germany
Matt Pyzdrowski - Sweden
Bakary Sanyang - Germany

Comprehensive list starts here......

FRIDAY

Thursday in ICELAND - Snuck in here from Thursday - Dion Acoff went 90 for Valur as they beat visitors IA 3 - 1 in the Iceland League Cup (Group 3) Valur win the group with a perfect 5 - 0 - 0 record and move into the play-offs

Will Daniels left Grindavik's game at Stjarnan after 10 minutes (Injury?) but Grindavik went on to draw 2 - 2 without their top scorer in the Iceland League Cup (Group 4) Grindavik finished tied 1st - 2nd on GD and progress to the Play-offs.

Selfoss and JC Mack have qualified for the Iceland League Cup Play-offs. They currently lead (Group 2) by 3 points but KR Reykjavik have a game left to play and could tie Selfoss (probably taking the #1 spot on GD)

OK Friday for real......

AC Horsens is fighting for its survival in Denmark's Superliga, today GK Steve Clark registered a Shut-out (8 saves) and Conor O'Brien went 81' in a goalless draw at home with Odense. Not a particularly good result, but a point is a point at this stage. The end of season relegation season is now officially started. There are 2 groups - Group 1 Randers, Horsens, Odense & Esbjerg. Group 2 Aalborg, Silkeborg, Aarhus & Viborg.

In Germany's Regionalliga (Nord) Ashton Gotz (90 + yellow card) and Hamburg II won their match up with VfB Lubeck 1 - 0 moving them into 5th place (but way to far behind leaders Meppen to make any difference)

Jerome Kiesewetter watched from the bench as Dusseldorf lost their home match against 1860 Munich 0 - 1 in Germany 2Liga

Joel Sonora went 90 in Stuttgart II 3 - 1 defeat at Elversberg in Regionalliga (Sudwest)

GK Quentin Westberg was an unused sub in Tours 3 - 1 win over Red Star in France's Ligue 2 . The win, their third straight, takes them out of the red zone.

John Brooks went 90 as Hertha fall 1 - 3 at home to Hoffenheim in Bundesliga. Hertha have now lost 2 straight and have slipped to 5th, with FC Koln 3 points behind and a game in hand - Hertha need some points or they could find themselves out of European competition next year

Jordan Siebatcheu started for Chateauroux as they hosted Beziers losing this one 1 - 2 in France's National League. The loss drops them from 2nd to 3rd place in the league.

In Netherlands Eerste Division, Gedion Zelalem came off the bench for Venlo at minute 76, but that didn't help, as visitors NAC Breda and Shane O'Neill (49) had little trouble today handling the league leaders, who have taken their foot off the pedal, 0 - 4. Venlo are still top by a ways, and NAC Breda are now in 6th Place tied with 3 other teams (which in an open Eerste Division promotion post season would make them 1 of 8 teams in a play-off spot)

A lively Lynden Gooch went 88' as Sunderland U23 won 0 - 1 at Norwich U23 to reach the Premier League International Cup Final, where they will face off with FC Porto. Lyndon hit the bar in the first half and caused Norwich U23 all kinds of problems

Cordt Andreas Flätgen got 7 minutes at the end of a game that saw Neunkirchen lose 3 - 0 at Wiesbach in Oberliga (Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar)

Oscar Ortiz went 90 in SC Feucht's 3 - 0 loss at Vfl Frohnlach in Oberliga (Bayern Nord)

In Junior Bundesliga (Sud/Sudwest) Kaiserslautern U19 won 3 - 1 over Ingolstadt U19, with Corey Anton going 64 minutes. Kaiserslautern U19 are tied for 1st place (2nd on GD) in the league

In Finland, GK Tim Murray and Honka went to ET and lost 1 - 2 (on PK's) to SJK in the semi-final of the Suomen Cup. Good run by Honka

Alec Becker came off the bench at 78' as visitors Freiburg U19 beat Stuttgart Kickers U19 1 - 2 in Junior Bundesliga (Sud/Sudwest)

No Andrew Wooten (Achilles tendon) for Sandhausen as they are played by visitors Russell Canouse (90) and Bochum to a Goalless Draw in Germany's 2Liga

Isaiah Young went 90 in Bremen U19 5 - 1 defeat at Wolfsburg U19 in Junior Bundesliga (North)

Mix Diskerud went 86' for Goteborg in the opening game of the Swedish Allsvenskan that ended in a 1 - 1 draw with Malmo

Niall Mason went 82' in Doncaster's 1 - 5 win at Grimsby in England's League Two. Doncaster now 6 points clear at the top of the league as they chase promotion.

GK Kenneth Kronholm (90) gets the Shut-out as Kiel visit Bremen II in Germany's 3Liga and come away with a 0 - 2 win. Kiel move up to #3 in the league.

Jann George went 90 as #5 Regensburg visited #1 Duisburg in Germany's 3Liga and drew 1 - 1 despite being a man down for the 2nd half of the game.

Shawn Barry went 90, picked up a yellow, as FSV Frankfurt visited Fortuna Koln and snagged a point in a goalless draw in 3Liga. FSV really needed 3 points as they struggle in the bottom 3, but a point is better than nothing

Joe Gyau (86), unused sub GK David Yelldell and Sonnenhof visited Paderborn in 3Liga and came away with a 1 - 2 win - good to see Joe Gyau starting regularly for Sonnenhof

Anton Peterlin went 90 as B93 beat Dalum IF 4 - 0 in Denmark's 2nd Division (Promotional Group) B93 move up to 3rd in the division.

Terence Boyd was an unused sub as Darmstadt fall 4 - 0 at RB Leipzig in Bundesliga. 2Liga next season for Darmstadt without doubt

A 92nd minute goal gave Bobby Wood (90 + Assist) and Hamburg a 2 - 1 win over FC Koln in Bundesliga. Hamburg move out of the bottom 3, but are still in trouble, but digging out of the hole with no loses in last 4 (3w 1d)

Christian Pulisic got a few minutes at the end of Dortmund's 1 - 1 draw at Schalke in Bundesliga. Dortmund missed the chance to go 3rd in the league, remain in 4th.

Aron Johannsson stayed on the bench as Bremen thumped Freiburg 2 - 5 in Bundesliga - rumors have Aron looking for a move this summer.

Alassane Kane went 90 in Bayern Hof's 0 - 1 loss at home to Burghausen in Regionalliga (Bayern). Hof are doomed to Oberliga next season

Eric Lichaj went 90, picked up a yellow card, as Nottingham traveled to Preston and grabbed a point in a 1 - 1 draw, which helped Nottingham go 2 points clear of the drop zone in England's Championship

Tim Ream came off the bench in the 93rd minute as a time waster, as Fulham did well, at Rotherham winning this one 0 - 1 in England's Championship and moving into 6th place (the last promotional play-off spot)

Torquay's defense did not help GK Brendan Moore, giving up a red card in the first half as they fall 0 - 1 at home to Chester in England's National League. Torquay are 1 point away from safety, so today's result really hurt

Kristian Scott went 90 for Nuneaton as they draw 1 - 1 at Stockport - a good away point for Nuneaton in England's National League (North)

Jon-Paul Pittman went 90 in Harrogate's 3 - 2 loss at Tamworth in England's National League (North)

Danijal Brkovic Scored a 90th minute tying goal in a thrilling comeback performance by Celik Zenica in Bosnia's Premier League (Relegation Group) in a 3 - 3 draw with #2 Mladost DK. It looks pretty certain that Celik will be relegated, but this game I am sure their fans will remember

Justin Kinjo went 90 as Dusseldorf II wins 3 - 2 over Dortmund II in Germany's Regionalliga (West)

Emerson Hyndman (90) for Rangers as they are held at home by lowly Motherwell to a 1 - 1 draw in Scotland's Premier League. If Rangers want to succeed they must win home games against lesser competition!!

In Scotland's League One, Kevin Dzierzawski was an unused sub as Peterhead drew 1 - 1 with Airdrieonians. The draw keeps Peterhead in the relegation zone

Along with Peterhead, Stenhousemuir are the other team headed for League Two in Scotland. Mason Robertson (90) is getting the opportunity to play regularly - but needs to score if he want's to continue. Today Steny visited Stranraer and lost 3 - 0.

In Sweden's Superettan, GK Matt Pyzdrowski gets the Shut-out as Helsingborg starts a new new season with a home win 1 - 0 over Trelleborgs

GK Bakary Sanyang gets the Shut-Out in a laugher as Pfeddersheim make a mockery of Burgbrohl 22 - 0 in Oberliga (Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar) No its not an April Fools joke.

Kevin Olali came off the bench at 57' mark as Morlautern lose at home 0 - 2 to Gonsenheim in Oberliga (Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar)

Fabian Hurzeler (90) as Pippinsried travel to Rain/Lech and win 1 - 4 in Oberliga (Bayern Sud)

Julian Ceesay (90) in FC Amberg's 4 - 2 win over Alemannia Haibach in Oberliga (Bayern Nord)

Oh Dear, Hunter Gorskie on a RED card for Legnica in Poland Division 1. Happily Hunters dismissal didn't hurt the result today in a Goalless Draw at #1 Chojniczanka.

Kene Eze started for North Geelong Warriors as they suffer a horrid 8 - 0 defeat at the hands of Heidelberg United in Australia's NPL (Victoria)

Alex De John played the first half of Dalkurd's goalless draw at home against Brommapojkarna in their opener in Sweden's Superettan (no sign of Andrew Stadler yet)

Kyle Varley was an unused sub as Red Star Zurich hosted Gossau in Switzerland 1.Liga Classic (Group 3) in a battle for 2nd place that saw Red Star lose 1 - 2 and placed 3rd behind Gossau

Timothy Chandler (90 + yellow - will miss next game) and Frankfurt were held at home by M'Gladbach in a Goalless Draw (Fabian Johnson out with thigh injury)

Danny Williams (90 + yellow) and Reading beat Leeds 1 - 0 in England's Championship, a team Reading could face in a post-season promotion match-up. League positions flip-flop today

Aaron Schoenfeld was a 2nd half sub for M. Tel Aviv as they lost 1 - 0 at leaders H. Beer Sheva in the Ligat ha'Al (Championship Group). M. Tel Aviv are pretty much set for a Europa League spot - they are 6 points out of 1st place and a UCL place

Kyrian Nwabueze started on the bench for Shirak as they fall 0 - 2 at home to Pyunik in Armenia's Premier Division

Ismar Tandir started for FK Sloboda as they traveled to Zeljeznicar in Bosnia Premier League (Championship Group). The game was a lot closer than the score tells, as Sloboda mounted a comeback at 3 - 0 down, to make it 3 - 2, before an ET goal nailed the coffin. Sloboda are in 5th spot in their effort to reach European football next season - right now it looks unlikely

In a match-up of #1 vs #2, Joshua Perez started for 2nd place Fiorentina U19 as they beat up on Lazio U19 5 - 2 in Italy's Primavera (Group A)

SUNDAY

Matt Miazga (90) in Vitesse 2 - 1 win over Nijmegen in Netherlands Eredivisie. Vitesse maintain their 5th place. League spots 4 - 7 will play-off at the end of the season for a European place. The points difference make it impossible for any of these teams to catch 3rd place PSV

Tim Tillman (90) in Bayern U19 4 - 2 win over Augsburg U19 in Junior Bundesliga (Süd/Südwest)....Bayern lead the league by 3 points

Julian Green went 68 in Stuttgart's 3 - 3 draw with Dresden in Germany's 2Liga. There are now 3 teams claiming #1 spot (50 points) with Stuttgart ahead on GD - very very close run up to the ens of the season, and promotion to Bundesliga

Having Perry Kitchen (90) back as Captain, and Bjorn Johnsen (90) attacking for Hearts, could not negate the power of Celtic who stroll to a 0 - 5 drubbing of their 5th place opponent. Hearts wobble continues with only 1 win and 4 losses over the past 5. Hearts should still make a post season appearance in the Championship Group, but will have to find their earlier form again to achieve a European spot next season

Sammy Adjai played the 2nd half for Naestved as they drew 0 - 0 with Nykobing in Denmark's 1st Division

Caleb Stanko went 56, picked up a yellow, as Vaduz traveled to Young Boys in Switzerland's Super League, losing this one 3 - 2 on two 90+ goals (hmm!)

Marc Heider went 90 in Osnabruck's 2 - 1 win over Rostock in Germany's 3Liga. With 4 wins in their last 5, Osnabruck have moved into 3rd place (Promotion play-off)

Royal Fennell (90 + yellow card) and Hallescher traveled to Zwickau in Germany's 3Liga only to fall 2 - 0 as their change in fortune continues (only 5 points from their last 5 matches)

Toni Suddoth, 90, in Stuttgart U19 3 - 0 loss at Mainz U19 in Junior Bundesliga (Süd/Südwest)

GK Brad Guzan seeing his time out at Middlesbrough was an unused sub today in their goalless draw at Swansea in England's Premier League

Yannis Becker (90) in TS Uphusen 1 - 1 draw at Gottingen in Oberliga (Niedersachsen)

Eric Lickert came off the bench at 77th minute as Frieburg II beat Offenburger FV 3 - 1 in Oberliga (Baden-Württemberg)

GK Benjamin Machini was an unused sub, as Barakaldo hosted Real Sociedad B in Spain's Segunda Division B (Group 2), losing this one 1 - 2 for their 2nd straight loss and a drop in their chance for a play-off spot

Ryan Finley went 83 minutes as Varnamo started their Superettan season with a rousing 4 - 0 win over Atvidabergs in Sweden's 2nd tier

GK Ethan Horvath, still has not played a meaningful game for Club Brugge in Belgium Jupiler League. Today he sat on the bench for the opener of the Post Season Championship Group (that settles European places) and watch as his team lost 2 - 1 to Gent. Club Brugge are in 2nd in the group, behind Anderlecht, and still in a UCL place.

GK Alex Horwath sat on the bench for Brann, as they visited Tromso in their Norway Eliteserien season opener. The game ended in a 1 - 1 draw when Tromso scored in the 90th minute

Nermin Crnkic went 77 minutes as Sarajevo held on for a 1 - 1 draw at home with Radnik Bijeljina in the Bosnian Premier League Championship Group. Sarajevo would have really benefited from a win, but still hold #3 spot, which gets them into Europa League. Of Note.....both goals came in the first 2 minutes of the game.
