WEEKLY WRAP: 9.18 thru 9 24.2017: 25 Goals and Still an Empty Feeling

So we had 25 goals this week, but I still feel it was not a good week...go figure. Maybe because the goals for the most part were scored in the lower leagues, and the people that you hope would score either didn't or more likely didn't play (injury or just dropped) So lets look at the outstanding performances...Andrija Novakovich continues to shine in the Netherlands, as does Christian Pulisic in Germany. Jordan Siebatcheu played twice and scored in each game in France and Gboly Ariyibi in England has finally found his scoring touch with 3 goals in 2 weeks. My favorites Gerald Ben and Isaac Kannah have been lighting up in Finland where they have scored a goal a piece in 3 matches, and are showing how a good goal scoring tandem should be. Finally young guns Timothy Weah and Romain Gall both found the back of the net.

In goal, well the headline belongs to Jeff Gal in Sweden, where he had yet another clean sheet - and yes I have lost count - as he is ensuring his team will be in the promotion hunt in the soon to be post season.

Finally my congratulations to Valur and Dion Acoff who won the Iceland Pepsideild and will now represent Iceland in next seasons Champions League - lets hope that Dion remains with Valur and we can follow them as they look for European glory

OK, that's it....to the lists. First the short list.........

US Players Involved in Promotion/Relegation Race in Iceland's Top 4 Tiers

Iceland, where many young American's used to get their first taste of European Football, has lost some of its shine for US players, where we only have a handful across the top  4 leagues. (This has been the case since the growth of USL) The seasons are pretty much done and the promotions/relegation's are set. I have used the full Icelandic names for the teams in this piece.

With just 2 matches left for the top tier - Úrvalsdeild - aka Pepsideild, Valur Reykjavík, with American Dion Acoff have qualified for the Champions League next year. Their point total is unassailable at 44, with a 9 point lead.
The only other team with an American player in the top tier is UMF Grindavík with Will Daniels. Earlier in the season Grindavik looked like a contender, but they faded as the season went on and now will probably end the season 5th or 6th

In 1. Deild - aka Inkasso-Deildin, there is only 1 match left for each team. We have 3 American's in 2 teams. Goalkeeper Will Dieterich and Harrison Hanley at Haukar Hafnarfjörður and JC Mack at UMF Selfoss. Neither team is involved in a Pro/Rel situation this season. Incidentally, the final match of the season for these 2 teams are against each other.

In 2. Deild (Division 2) there is just 1 team, with 2 American's. Tanner Sica and Gregory Conrad both play for Tindastoll, who started badly and turned things around in August. Tindastoll will end up mid-table after staying undefeated in their last 6 matches

3.Deild (Division 3) completed its season last weekend. I have only identified 2 American's at this level and their teams are going in opposite directions
Shane Haley (UVM Alum) at Thróttur Vogar finished in 2nd place and are promoted
Devonte Daryll Delroy Small at Reynir Sandgerdi has been relegated

US Players Involved in the Promotion/Relegation Race in Finland's Top 3 Tiers

So lets look at how Finland is shaping up for US Players in respect to Promotion/Relegation

Starting in Veikkausliiga (Top Tier)
We only have one team with an American - Brian Span at Mariehamn.
With 6 matches left - Mariehamn sit in 6th with 40 points. Lahti sit in 3rd the final Europa League spot on 42 points - so with 6 matches left it is certainly possible that Mariehamn can catch them. Their current record (last 5) is 3 wins, 1 draw 1 loss - I guess I would say they need to do their job and get a little luck to qualify for European play. #1 goes to Champions League, #2 & #3 to Europa League

There are no other teams with US Players, so no relegation battle here.

In Ykkonen  (2nd Tier)
There are 4 matches left in the season

Currently TPS lead the division by 3 points for Honka who have GK Tim Murray in 2nd. KPV are 5 points behind Honka. Its a pretty good bet that Honka will finish #1 or 2...#1 is automatic promotion, #2 is a play-off situation with Team 11 of Veikkausliiga (currently HIFK) Both TPS and Honka have won their last 3, while KPV are fading - I guess I would say that Honka gets promoted which ever way the top 2 ends

In the relegation fight GrIFK look doomed - they are 5 points astray at the bottom and the competition over the next few weeks includes Honka and #4 team Haka - Daniel Stevens looks to be playing in Kakkonen next season

Note: Felix De Bona leads the Golden Boot for Ykkonen with 11 goals and Christian Eissele is 3rd with 9 goals)

Kakkonen - 3 Groups (3rd Tier)
The group winners and the best second place team have a chance of winning one of two promotion places to Ykkönen after a four team playoff. The bottom three teams in each group 10, 11 and 12 will be relegated to Kolmonen

Group A
2 Matches left

#1 KTP and #2 PEPO are locked in a great battle for the 1 spot.
PEPO has GK Paul Blanchette in their corner they sit in #2, 1 point behind KTP on 41 points
PEPO may have an ever so slight advantage as both of their upcoming opponents are in the red zone (at least on points) while KTP play 2 teams that are mid-table. Both KTP and PEPO have the same record over the last 5 matches, so nobody has an advantage of  'on a roll'
I am guessing - this is a pick'em!

At the bottom Kultsu with GK Craig Hill are just above the drop zone - based on GD - its just so close to call teams 10 and 11, mathematically 7 teams could still be in relegation trouble

Note. Gerald Ben is in 7th Place in the Group Golden Boot  with 6 goals

Group B
2 Matches left

Our team to follow is BK-46 with Jacob Bushue and Mitchel Lopez. They currently sit in 4th place, but only 4 points separate 1st from 4th (only 1 point between 2nd and 4th) BK-46 are on a run winning all of their last 5, but the next 2 matches are complete opposites - playing #1 SalPa and last placed EsPa (in that order) I believe that if they beat SalPa they will get into that promotion group, if not they will have to wait and see if their the best of the 2nd place teams

No relegation problems in this division

Group C
2 Matches left

This division looks to be all but settled. AC Kajaani are 5 points ahead of GBK with Chris Corcoran, Lawrence Smith, Jossimer Sanchez & Patrick Khouri. VIFK with Ian Garrett lost the past weekend and cannot catch GBK any longer (so its a 2 horse race). It's assumed that AC Kajaani will not slip up and win the division. GBK are on a run, winning their last 5 matches, and will have to do their job winning the next 2 and hope that their point total is enough for the spot given to the best #2 team.

At the bottom, OTP with Timothy Wilson are in last place and relegated. Mathematically TP-47 and Jordan Rouse could disappear from Kakkonen but I don't think that will happen, they only need 1 point from 2 matches to be safe

Note Lawrence Smith is tied 4th in the Group C Golden Boot with 9 goals

Here are the current points, with max points possible in brackets, for the 3 Groups so you can see how close this all is with just 2 games remaining - again the winner of each group and the best 2nd team qualify for the 4 team play-offs, with the top 2 play-off teams promoted to Ykkonen.

Group A
KTP 42 (48)
PEPO 41 (47)
Klubi-04 38 (44)

Group B
SalPa 42 (48)
Vikiingit 39 (45)
BK-46 38 (44)
MuSa  38 (44)

Group C
AC Kajaani 47 (53)
GBK 42 (48)

That's it - 9 teams vying for 4 places in the play-off, with 2 teams to promoted

WEEKLY WRAP: 9.11 thru 9.17.2017: Lot's of Goals - But not by Many You Know!

So, another busy week with a ton of matches all over the world...and yes to go with that we have goals (22), assists (4) and clean sheets (5). Yeah, but hold on a minute, who are these guys scoring all these goals? Well the young and unsung are putting out their skills for you. Here...2 goal games by Timothy Tillman, Gboly Ariyibi, Gregory Conrad & Ryan Malone, exceptional performances by Andrija Novakovich 2matches, 2 goals 1 assist (and a MOTM)  Jordan Siebatcheu a goal and 2 assists in 1 game! Then we have Emmanuel Sabbi, who was on the bench for the Hobro senior squad one day , the next he scored for the junior squad and then 4 days later debuted for the senior squad (I think that defines "hunger") Cameron Carter- Vickers scored on his debut, and Andrew Stadler scored 3 minutes into extra time to give his team the win and the top spot in their division.

The goalkeepers also continued their dominance with Ethan Horvath in Belgium, Kenneth Kronholm in Germany and Jeff Gal in Sweden all piling on their clean-sheet tally's. Young Brandon Austin gets a clean sheet for Tottenham U23's and Kris Devaux who had a stellar early season (before injury) is back and adding to his value in Norway

So its been a strange week, with so many of our 'senior' players injured or on the bench its been those unsung players who have come to the fore and kept the continual growth of American soccer in the minds of teams and fans alike around the world........to the lists

MONDAY

In Denmark, Emmanuel Sabbi (who was on the bench for Hobro's senior squad on Friday) Found himself playing for the reserve team today, and Scored in the 72nd minute to give Hobro a 4 - 3 lead over Thisted. Emmanuel was subbed out at 88' and Thisted scored the equalizer at 90+3 for a final result of 4 - 4

In Finland Kakkonen (Group A) it was a 1st v 2nd as PEPO and GK Paul Blanchette (90) visited KTP - the prize - top spot in the division. Unfortunately, what looked like a positive push, with a 60th minute goal, fell apart as home team KTP, hit back with 2 goals in 6 minutes, then a red card reduced PEPO's chances of a draw, and finally KTP hammered the nail home in ET for a 3 - 1 result. PEPO are now 1 point behind and in the #2 spot (only the top team moves on to the promotional play-off)

Mix Diskerud (90 +yellow) and Goteborg pulled even at the end of the first half, and entered the 2nd half at home with hope - that was crushed a few minutes later when visitors Djurgarden scored 2 goals in 2 minutes leaving Goteborg with a home loss, the final result 1 - 3

Jordan Siebatcheu came off the bench at 71' as Reims fall 0 - 1 at home to Brest, in France Ligue 2. Two straight losses for Riems drops them to third place

GK Brendan Moore (90) and Rochdale looked on the wrong end of the score - then scored twice in ET to win 2 - 1 over Doncaster and Niall Mason (90). Both sides are in the lower half of the league, both on 6 points from 7 games

Usually a sub, Duane Holmes (66) started for Scunthorpe in their home match against Blackburn. Losing 0 - 1 with Blackburn making their win streak 4, while Scunthorpe has now only 1 point from their last 2 matches

Cameron Carter-Vickers (90) made his debut for Sheffield United as they traveled to Bolton and Antonee Robinson (76). Both players on loan from their EPL clubs. While Bolton found no way off the leagues bottom spot - with just 2 points from 7 matches

Jon-Paul Pittman (61) Scored Torquay's only goal as they fall 3 - 1 at Bromley in the English National League, and find no relief from their horrid season (so far) as they languish at the bottom of the league, 4 points adrift already after 10 matches. Jon-Paul has scored 3 times in 7 starts

Bournemouth U23 won at Wigan U23, with Emerson Hyndman playing...that's all folks....Bournemouth did not issue a team list pre or pro match...we know that Emerson played at least 50 minutes, as a tweet mentioned a miss. Final result Wigan U23 1 - 0 Bournemouth U23

In Iceland Pepsideild, Valur and Dion Acoff (9) traveled to Akureyri and played to a 1 - 1 draw. Valur are 7 points clear at the top, but today's result shaved a few points off their lead. With just a few games left, Valur are still favorite for Champions League play next season

Also in Iceland Pepsideild Grindavik with Will Daniels (90) continued their downward spiral with a 2 - 1 loss at Vestmannaeyjar. Grindavik now only have 4 points from their last 5 matches
