WEEKLY WRAP: 12.25 Thru 12.31.2017 - Final Wrap of the Year

OK then, its NYE and the last match of the year involving an American has been played (in India)

The week was pretty much all about England as everyone else took time off. So I will keep it short and sweet. Shout Out to Tim Ream who not only scored, a very rare event for the defender, but the goal was a game winner. Duane Holmes has a goal and an assist in his Boxing Day outing and Niall Mason scored a PK, his 2nd consecutive match with a PK goal. The other performances are below (I said it would be short)

The Transfer Window will open tomorrow in some countries...we will have all the news here...so watch out for the regular postings please.

OK to the lists, first the short version;

GOALS
Tim Ream - England
Duane Holmes - England
Niall Mason (pk) - England
Mason Robertson - Scotland

ASSISTS
Duane Holmes - England
Antonee Robinson - England

.....and the longer more comprehensive listing;

CHRISTMAS DAY

No matches scheduled

BOXING DAY

Juan Torres was on the bench for Lokoren as they hosted KV Mechelen in Belgium's Jupiler League, winning 2 - 0 for their 2nd straight win.

In Wales Premier League, Jay Denny (90) and Newtown took a 2 goal lead and were coasting until a 68 minute PK, gave visitors TNS hope, that they changed into a win, despite losing a player to a red card along the way. Final 2 - 3 in favor of TNS

And the annual soccer-fest, that is Boxing Day in England

In England's Premier League, Emerson Hyndman remained on the bench, and watched Bournemouth have to battle back, after leading, to a 3 - 3 draw at home with West Ham

Danny Williams, did not get off the bench as Huddersfield were held to a 1 - 1 draw at home by Stoke and Geoff Cameron (90 + yellow)

In England's Championship, Tim Ream (90) Scored a rare Goal to give Fulham the early lead as they visited #2 Cardiff and won convincingly 2 - 4. Luca de la Torre was available off the bench for Fulham

Antonee Robinson came off the bench early at 36 min to replace an injured team-mate as Bolton traveled to Middlesbrough, losing 2 - 0 as they continue to flounder in the bottom 3 of the league

Nottingham Forest continue their wobbly season with a game that on paper they should not have lost. Eric Lichaj (90) and his team were dominated by a Sheffield Wednesday team that (still) are below them in the table 0 - 3 at home - go figure

Two US prospects planned to battled it out as Sheffield United and Cameron Carter-Vickers (90) defended home turf against Sunderland and Lyndon Gooch (67) - meh! didn't happen Sheffield looking to reclaim form really didn't have much problem with bottom 3 Sunderland, winning 3 - 0

In England's League One, GK Brendan Moore is still the #2, and watched as Rochdale lost 2 - 0 at #3 Blackburn and remain 2nd from bottom of the league

Scunthorpe move to #4 as Duane Holmes (90 + yellow) Scored their 2nd Goal and provided the Assist for the first, in a 2 - 3 win at Blackpool. Scunthorpe has only lost once in their last 5.

Niall Mason Scored his 2nd PK in as many games, as Doncaster dispatched Northampton 3 - 0 and continue their march out of the red zone, up to tied 12th in the table

Gboly Ariyibi (90) and MK Don's continue going in the wrong direction as they lose at home to lowly Plymouth 0 - 1, just 2 points from their last 5 matches see MK Don's teetering just above the drop zone

Jon-Paul Pittman came off the bench at 75 minutes, as 10 man Torquay held on for a 1 - 1 draw at Eastleigh in the English National League. Torquay are 1 point away from safety, but 3 draws, a win and a loss in their last 5 has not generated the points they need to escape yet

Finally today, Kenny Saief never got off the bench as #4 Gent visited #3 Anderlecht, losing 1 - 0 in Belgium's Jupiler League. Both teams retain their positions

WEDNESDAY

DeAndre Yedlin (90) as Newcastle faced off with an EPL dominant Manchester City, and without tongue-in-cheek, played to a very good 0 - 1 loss. With possession swinging between 80 & 90% in City's favor the match was more of a practice field defense vs offense game. The goal really was a
result of a lapse in concentration by the Newcastle defense, just once and just momentarily - enough for City to make you pay

GK Danny Rogers resumed his normal position on the bench as Aberdeen beat Partick 1 - 0 to draw within 8 points of leaders Celtic in Scotland's Premier League

THURSDAY

No Matches

FRIDAY

Niall Mason (90) as Doncaster beats Rochdale (GK Brendon Moore on the bench) 2 - 0 in England's League One. 3 wins in a row for Doncaster who move up to 10th place. Rochdale are in trouble, 2nd from bottom

Keaton Parks remained on the bench as Benfica traveled to Setubal and draw 2 - 2 after being down 2 - 0 in the first half in Portugal League Cup (Group A). Benfica ended group play with 3 draws and in 2nd place, not enough to advance

SATURDAY

Jay Denny (90) as Newtown visited league leaders TNS and came back from 2 goals down to win 2 - 4 in Wales Premier League - great win to end the year

Geoff Cameron (90) as Stoke are trounced 5 - 0 by Chelsea in the English Premier League. Stoke on 20 points are just 2 points off the drop zone

Danny Williams played the final 8 minutes as Huddersfield were held scoreless at home to Burnley. 3 consecutive draws now for Huddersfield

DeAndre Yedlin (90 + yellow) as they battled visitors Brighton to a goalless draw in the EPL in a game that had 2 struggling teams looking for points

In England's Championship, Tim Ream (90) and Fulham traveled to Hull and battled to a 2 - 2 draw. Fulham has only lost once in their last 5

Lyndon Gooch came off the bench at 70 minutes as Sunderland found a way to win 0 - 1 at Nottingham Forest with Eric Lichaj (90). The win elevates Sunderland above the drop zone on GD, while Nottingham are in a deep funk with 3 losses and a draw in their last 4 outings

In what is best described as a tactical change, Cameron Carter-Vickers was totally ineffectual and replaced at 31 minutes of the first half as Sheffield United hosted Antonee Robinson (90 + yellow) ,and an Assist, and Bolton, losing this one 0 - 1. Bolton now 3rd from bottom, while Sheffield United
hang on to 6th place, but look a bit wobbly right now

Scunthorpe and Duane Holmes (90) will be happy to have escaped #3 Blackburn with a point in England's League One following a 2 - 2 draw. Scunthorpe move up to #4 as things get tighter at the top of the table

Gboly Ariyibi was an unused sub as 9 man MK Don's held on to a 1 - 0 lead for an hour over Peterborough in League One. MK Don's may have done enough to survive the drop - time will tell as the 2nd half of the season is well in play

GK Danny Rogers, was again on the bench as the backup keeper as Aberdeen were held at home, in a goalless affair, by Hearts in Scotland's Premier League. The draw did not help Aberdeen as they chase Celtic for the top spot.

In Scotland's League 2, Mason Robertson (90) Scored Peterhead's 4th Goal as they go on to beat League Leaders Montrose in an unlikely away win 2 - 6. The result puts Peterhead in 2nd place, 3 points behind Montrose, with 2 games in hand

Jon-Paul Pittman played the 2nd half as Torquay visited Boreham Wood in England's National League, losing 2 - 0. Torquay will have to go on an incredible run to avoid relegation into the obscurity of England's minnow leagues

Joshua Perez played the final few minutes in Livorno's 2 - 0 defeat of Prato in Italy's Serie C (Group A) match up. Livorno are now 12 points clear at the top of the table and look like a lock for Serie B action next season.

SUNDAY

GK Paul Rachubka came of the bench at the 73rd minute, presumably to replace an injured colleague, as Kerala Blasters suffered only their 2nd defeat of the season 1 - 3 at home to Bengaluru in India's ISL

December 24, 2017

WEEKLY WRAP: 12.18 thru 12.24.2017: Winter Break is Upon Us!

To start, Happy Holiday's to you all......

So this week had a greatly reduced schedule, league play in Europe has reached its Winter Break, and  the national cup matches fill the pre-Christmas calendar. Still there are some shout outs due to our guys. Mukwelle Akale scored the winner for Villarreal C in Spain, Niall Mason scored the winner (PK) for Doncaster in England, and Andrija Novakovich scored a brace for Telstar in their 3 - 2 win in the Netherlands. In the goalkeeper bracket Brandon Austin kept a clean sheet for Tottenham's U23 in England

Well that's it for this week...we will be doing this again next week, although there are even fewer games to track...so see you next week with the wrap.

SATURDAY

Trouble getting info until now, but Ander Egiluz went 90 as Basconia lost 2 - 1 at Sodupe in Spain's Tercera

MONDAY

Gabriel Rosario was backup keeper for Reading U23 as they draw 1 - 1 with Southampton U23 in England's Premier League 2 (Group 2). Reading U23 slip a little on the result, but are in 3rd (PL2 had 2 Groups - top team in Group 2 is automatically promoted to group 1 - the 4 teams following go into play-offs)

Giles Phillips (90) as QPR U23 hosted Watford U23 and found themselves having to battle to a 2 - 2 draw in England's PDL (South). A stretch of bad results has dropped QPR U23 down to 2nd place

2 goals in the first 15 minutes by Lens was enough for the win as Maki Tall (20) came off the bench for Tours, but to no avail in a 2 - 0 defeat in France Ligue 2

Joshua Perez remained on the bench today as Livorno allowed the lead to slip from them, as they played to a 2 - 2 draw at home to Piacenza in Italy's Serie C (Group A)

M.Tel Aviv keep climbing towards the top (now 4th) in Ligat ha'Al. Today Aaron Schoenfeld came off the bench to help them hold on to a 1 - 2 lead, which he did successfully, over B. Jerusalem

Konrad de la Fuente (90) as Barcelona U19's fall 1 - 0 to RCD Espanyol U19. Barcelona U19's suffered only their second defeat of the league campaign and it gave RCD Espanyol a Barcelona derby win. Only five points separate the two teams in the league table

TUESDAY

Alfredo Morales (90) as Ingolstadt are booted from the DFB Pokal 1 - 0 by 3Liga Paderborn

GK Brandon Austin (90) gets the Shut Out, as Tottenham U23 are held to a scoreless draw at home by Sunderland U23 in England's Premier League 2 (Group 1) in a match between the 2 bottom teams (#11 & 12)

Kyle Scott (90 + yellow) as Chelsea U23 come back from 2 goals down to win 3 - 2 over Manchester City U23 in England's Premier League 2 (Group 1). Neither team are shining this season (#8 & 9)

Weston McKennie got 11 minutes in at the end of the game as Schalke beat FC Koln 1 - 0 in DFB Pokal and move on to the quarter finals

Maurits de Baar remained on the bench as Waalwijk visited Willem II and got trounced 3 - 0 and out of the KNVB Beker in Netherlands

WEDNESDAY

Joe Efford (43) as Ergotelis fall 3 - 2 at Apollon Larissa in Greece Football League. Joe left early, as the Ergotelis coach made adjustments following a straight red and PK, reducing the team to 10 men in the 27th minute.

Timothy Weah off the bench at 66' as PSG II beat Saint-Priest 2 - 0 in France's National 2 (Group B) Good result for the re-emergent PSG II as they climb up the table

Bremen with Aron Johannsson getting in 7 minutes, won an exciting match with Freiburg and Caleb Stanko (90) 3 - 2 in the DFB Pokal in Germany and will play in the quarter finals

By way of an FYI; M'Gladbach lost their DFB Pokal match 0 - 1 to Leverkusen. Fabian Johnson did not dress for this one.

In Spain's Tercera Division (Group 6) Villarreal C won on Mukwelle Akale's 30th minute Goal 1 -0 over CD Almazora...Villarreal C improving, with just 1 loss in their last 5

Benfica did it again, gave up a 2 goal lead, with sloppy defending and end up in a 2 - 2 draw at home with Portimonense. Keaton Parks entered the match in the 62nd minute, and played pretty well, despite being played out of position. Advancing past the Portugal League Cup Group stage now looks out of reach.

Emerson Hyndman made the 18 for Bournemouth, but not the pitch as Chelsea beat Bournemouth 2 - 1 on an ET goal in England's Carabao Cup Quarter Final

In Germany DFB Pokal late matches, Bayern took care of Dortmund and Christian Pulisic (90) on 2 first half goals 2 - 1 to advance. Dortmund have now been booted from the Champions League and the DFB Pokal....not their best season

Heidenheim and Kevin Lankford (103) eventually fall to Frankfurt (minus Timothy Chandler) 1 - 2 in extra-time Frankfurt advance to the quarter finals with Bayern

THURSDAY

Juan Torres remained on the bench as Lokoren had a good win (well they're all good I guess) at Antwerp 1 - 2, who drop a place to 5th, while Lokoren jump up 5 spots to 11th

Kenny Saief came off the bench at 69' in a very tight game that was decided 7 minutes into ET, when Gent scored the winner over visitors Charleroi in Belgium's other Jupiler match today. The 1 - 0 win moves Gent up to 4th place.

FRIDAY

An 89th minute PK ended GK Paul Rachubka's shut out streak as Kerala Blasters settle for a 1 - 1 draw at league leaders Chennaiyin in India's ISL

Andrija Novakovich (83) Scored 2 Goals as Telstar go on to win 3 - 2 at home over Graafschap in Eerste Divisie. Telstar now 4th after 3 wins a draw and a loss, Andrija now has 9 goals this season (last scored in October)

Kai Koreniuk (90) as cellar dwelling Jong AZ lose big, 2 - 7, at home to league leaders Nijmegem in Eerste Divisie. That's 5 straight losses as thing go from bad to worse

Jay Denny (90) as Newtown were trounced 4 - 0 by Connah's Q in the Welsh Premier League. Newtown are now off the pace for post season play.

Ander Egiluz (90 + yellow) as Basconia hosted Amurrio Club in Tercera Division in Spain in a match that ended goalless

SATURDAY

Joshua Perez played the final 15' as Livorno traveled to Gavorrano and won 2 - 4 in Italy Serie C. Livorno now 11 points clear at the top - aiming for automatic promotion to Serie B

In England......

Emerson Hyndman sat on the Bournemouth bench as Manchester City dismantled his team 4 - 0 in the Premier League

Danny Williams (90) as Huddersfield traveled to Southampton and played to a 1 - 1 draw.3rd start in a row for Danny

Geoff Cameron (90) for Stoke as they win 3 - 1 over West Brom. in the EPL breaking a 3 match losing streak

Great win for Newcastle and DeAndre Yedlin (90) as they traveled to West Ham and snagged 3 points in a 2 - 3 result that pulls them out of the relegation zone

Antonee Robinson spent today on the bench watching Bolton beat 2nd place Cardiff 2 - 0 in the Championship. Bolton still in trouble, but improving

Tim Ream (90) with Luca de la Torre on the bench as Fulham beats Barnsley 2 - 1 in the Championship

Eric Lichaj (90) as Nottingham Forest visited Preston in a game that ended even at 1 - 1

Lyndon Gooch (90) as Sunderland held on for a 1 - 1 draw against 10 man Birmingham - that's 8 points from their last 5 matches - but still in relegation zone

Niall Mason (90) PK Goal was enough for Doncaster to best home team Bristol Rovers 0 - 1 in England's League One

It has to be hard for GK Brendon Moore to spend gameday on the bench each week, today he watched Rochdale held to a 1 - 1 draw by visitors Walsall in League One

Gboly Ariyibi came off the bench at 66' but was unable to change the result, as MK Don's fall 2 - 1 at Rotherham and slip closer to the red zone in League One

Duane Holmes (90) as Scunthorpe move into 4th place after a 3 - 1 win at home over Southend in League One

GK Danny Rogers was in his usual back-up role as Aberdeen were no match for Celtic as they lose 3 - 0 in Scotland's Premier League. Aberdeen are still in 2nd place, but today's match shows the superiority of Celtic over the rest of the league

Mason Robertson (90) as Peterhead win their 3rd straight 3 - 2 over Cowdenbeath 3 - 2 and move into 2nd place in Scotland's League Two. Peterhead are 6 points behind leaders Montrose, but have played 2 games less than the leaders

Cameron Carter-Vickers (90) as Sheffield United visited Aston Villa in a match driven by mistakes (including CCV on the Villains 2nd goal) so a fair result, 2 - 2 as both teams survive their errors. Oh, both teams on 38 points - tied for 6th place in Championship

Aaron Schoenfeld remained on the bench today as M.Tel Aviv beat Shmona 2 - 1 and take over 3rd place in Israel's Ligat ha'Al. 3 points behind leaders H.Haifa

In today's final match Vitesse with Matt Miazga (90 + yellow) fall 2 - 1 to PSV in Eredivisie. Vitesse slide continues, now out of the Europa League play-off group in Eredivisie - they need to turn this around fast.

No matches Sunday

December 17, 2017

WEEKLY WRAP: 12.11 Through 12.17.2017 - Chandler/Siebatcheu/Pulisic Shine

This week was really about 3 players, Timothy Chandler, Jordan Siebatcheu and Christian Pulisic - all three had outstanding matches and contributed to their teams success.

First, the wrap is a little shorter this week, weather is the culprit. So many games postponed, it will be interesting to see how, especially in Germany, these games get made up. The German Leagues just shut for the Winter Break, so no matches scheduled till mid/late January. Note: There are some Cup matches scheduled next week.

So to the shout outs.....Timothy Chandler in his first game back for Frankfurt had two assists in the first 30 minutes, enough to ensure their victory. Timothy came back energized by his time off and played maybe his best game this season. Jordan Siebatcheu gave some additional bubbles to the Champagne-Ardenne region of France, Riems, with a hat-trick performance, and for good measure, an assist. Finally, Christian Pulisic waited till the very end of the match, for effect, to score Dortmund's winning goal and send the fans into a state of delirium

Our forgotten/re-emerging player is not playing in the hallowed grounds of Europe, but in the infant ISL in India. Keeper Paul Rachubka has now played 5 straight matches since joining the Southern Indian team of Kerala and he has managed 3 clean sheet's. Paul spent the majority of his career in England.

Young Gun of the week, any one named Malone!! Maurice scored for Augsburg U19 and Ryan Scored for Lokomotive Leipzig - both in Germany

To the lists. First the short(est) list I have done

GOALS
Ryan Malone - Germany
Jordan Siebatcheu (3) - France
Christian Pulisic - Germany
Maurice Malone - Germany

ASSIST
Timothy Chandler (2) - Germany
Jordan Siebatcheu - France

SHUT OUT
Paul Rachubka - India

......and the longer more comprehensive listing;

MONDAY

Giles Phillips (10) as QPR U23 fall 2 - 1 at Millwall U23 in England's PDL (South) QPR U23 had the lead until 72nd minute - they are still top of the table though, but after 2 loses and a draw their lead is now cut to 1 point

Perry Kitchen went 90 & picked up a yellow as the hapless Randers lose 0 - 4 at home to Midtyjlland in the Danish Superliga...can any one say Division 1 next season

Aaron Schoenfeld (57) as M Tel Aviv are held to a goalless draw at M. Petach Tikva. No loses but the draws are pilling up and the points slipping away for M Tel Aviv, now in 4th place in Israels Ligat ha'Al

TUESDAY

In his all to familiar spot, Shawn Barry remained on the bench as Korona traveled to Jagiellonia and got trounced 5 - 1 in Poland Ekstraklase. 2nd straight loss for Korona, who slip to 5th, but giving up 8 goals in 2 matches - not good!

John Brooks (90) in Wolfsburg's 1 - 1 home draw with RB Leipzig. Leipzig are clearly the 2nd best team in Bundesliga, right now, so a draw and a much needed point for Wolfsburg is not such a bad result.

Kenny Saief (72) as Gent are bounced out of the Belgium Cup 4 - 1 at Kortijk in the quarter finals. Kenny's first start since returning from injury, a positive to take away (maybe the only one) from Gent's performance.

Caleb Stanko off the bench at 78' helping Freiburg maintain their 1 - 0 lead over M'Gladbach till the end of the match. December 10, 2017

WEEKLY WRAP: 12.4 through 12.9.2017: Weather Takes its Toll - But Still Goals

This weeks schedule was decimated by bad weather in Europe, primarily in the lower leagues, but noticeable even in the bigger matches. So your reading time will be less (and its good practice for me prior to the Winter break).

The shout-outs are not all positive this week, but with the reduced match's the negatives stick out a little more. We lost our Europa League teams, M.Tel Aviv, Hertha and Vitesse, but all played well in their final competition outings, with GK Jonathan Klinsmann perhaps overshadowing the other US players, with a late game saving PK save, retaining Hertha's 1 - 1 draw. On the other side of the coin, the usually reliable PK taker Andrija Novakovich, missed a PK that would have given Telstar the lead and maybe the win in the Netherlands. I don't usually follow U17 league matches, but in Saturday's B-Junior Bundesliga we had 5, yup! five, young US prospects on show in one game, and a goal from Justin Butler in the game. It was good to see Geoff Cameron play after a long time away following a concussion, welcome back Geoff, Finally in Denmark's Superliga, Jonathan Amon and Emanuel Sabbi were on opposite sides in an exciting match-up of #3 vs #4...young guns that will (IMHO) feature in the US national squads in the coming years.

Enough! to the listings, first the short listing........

In the UCL, Dortmund and Christian Pulisic (90) visited Real Madrid and lost 3 - 2. I did not see the match, but reports indicate that Christian had a good outing.

THURSDAY

Europa League Day - a pretty good day for our guys, but all for naught.

M. Tel Aviv with Aaron Schoenfeld (90) won at Villarreal in Spain 0 - 1. They did not qualify for the next round, but a great win nevertheless

Hertha Berlin and debutante GK Jonathan Klinsmann draw 1 - 1 with Sweden's Ostersunds, with Jonathan saving a PK in the 86th minute to maintain the draw for his club. Not a bad debut. Hertha are also eliminated from the competition

Tours didn't put Maki Tall on the pitch till the 88th minute, and lost 1 - 2 to Nancy, leaving them in last place well adrift of the teams above them

Maurits De Baar remained on the bench in an absolutely futile performance by Waalwijk in Netherlands Eerste Divisie. Down to 9 men in the last half an hour they get clobbered for 6 in a 6 - 0 away loss

Just to add to the misery today in the Netherlands, Andrija Novakovich (65) the usually reliable penalty taker, missed a PK that would have given Telstar the lead as they hosted FC Emmen in Eerste Divisie and played to a goalless draw. Both teams are on 27 points (6th & 7th)

Cameron Carter-Vickers remained on the bench as Sheffield United continued their spiral downturn, losing 1 - 2 to Bristol City (and surrendering 3rd place) in England's Championship. It was not that long ago that they led the division, but 1 point from 4 outings, in such a competitive league has them just hanging on to a top 6 place......

GK Danny Rogers will get his chance some-day, till then he must be content with back-up keeper role for Aberdeen, who today won 0 - 1 at Dundee, in Scotland's Premier League. Aberdeen are in 2nd place, just 4 points behind Celtic.

SATURDAY

OK this is not a match that I would normally track, but its a fun set up that had the potential for 5 USYNT playing for their respective teams.

Malik Tillman (yes brother of) played the whole game (80) Justin Butler off the bench at 61' Scored the 2nd Goal, Jalen Hawkins came off the bench at 77' as Bayern Munich U17 hosted Ian Hoffman (off the bench at 53) Jeremiah Kasteleiner (who is not yet eligible for USYNT), remained on the bench and Karlsruhrer U17 winning 3 - 0 in B-Junior Bundesliga (Süd/Südwest)

In Germany 3Liga, Bremen II and Isaiah Young (68) got a 75th minute goal to draw 2 - 2 at Meppen. 3 straight draws for Bremen II, have pulled them out of the red zone (on GD)
