WEEKLY WRAP: 12.25 Thru 12.31.2017 - Final Wrap of the Year

OK then, its NYE and the last match of the year involving an American has been played (in India)

The week was pretty much all about England as everyone else took time off. So I will keep it short and sweet. Shout Out to Tim Ream who not only scored, a very rare event for the defender, but the goal was a game winner. Duane Holmes has a goal and an assist in his Boxing Day outing and Niall Mason scored a PK, his 2nd consecutive match with a PK goal. The other performances are below (I said it would be short)

The Transfer Window will open tomorrow in some countries...we will have all the news here...so watch out for the regular postings please.

OK to the lists, first the short version;

GOALS
Tim Ream - England
Duane Holmes - England
Niall Mason (pk) - England
Mason Robertson - Scotland

ASSISTS
Duane Holmes - England
Antonee Robinson - England

.....and the longer more comprehensive listing;

CHRISTMAS DAY

No matches scheduled

BOXING DAY

Juan Torres was on the bench for Lokoren as they hosted KV Mechelen in Belgium's Jupiler League, winning 2 - 0 for their 2nd straight win.

In Wales Premier League, Jay Denny (90) and Newtown took a 2 goal lead and were coasting until a 68 minute PK, gave visitors TNS hope, that they changed into a win, despite losing a player to a red card along the way. Final 2 - 3 in favor of TNS

And the annual soccer-fest, that is Boxing Day in England

In England's Premier League, Emerson Hyndman remained on the bench, and watched Bournemouth have to battle back, after leading, to a 3 - 3 draw at home with West Ham

Danny Williams, did not get off the bench as Huddersfield were held to a 1 - 1 draw at home by Stoke and Geoff Cameron (90 + yellow)

In England's Championship, Tim Ream (90) Scored a rare Goal to give Fulham the early lead as they visited #2 Cardiff and won convincingly 2 - 4. Luca de la Torre was available off the bench for Fulham

Antonee Robinson came off the bench early at 36 min to replace an injured team-mate as Bolton traveled to Middlesbrough, losing 2 - 0 as they continue to flounder in the bottom 3 of the league

Nottingham Forest continue their wobbly season with a game that on paper they should not have lost. Eric Lichaj (90) and his team were dominated by a Sheffield Wednesday team that (still) are below them in the table 0 - 3 at home - go figure

Two US prospects planned to battled it out as Sheffield United and Cameron Carter-Vickers (90) defended home turf against Sunderland and Lyndon Gooch (67) - meh! didn't happen Sheffield looking to reclaim form really didn't have much problem with bottom 3 Sunderland, winning 3 - 0

In England's League One, GK Brendan Moore is still the #2, and watched as Rochdale lost 2 - 0 at #3 Blackburn and remain 2nd from bottom of the league

Scunthorpe move to #4 as Duane Holmes (90 + yellow) Scored their 2nd Goal and provided the Assist for the first, in a 2 - 3 win at Blackpool. Scunthorpe has only lost once in their last 5.

Niall Mason Scored his 2nd PK in as many games, as Doncaster dispatched Northampton 3 - 0 and continue their march out of the red zone, up to tied 12th in the table

Gboly Ariyibi (90) and MK Don's continue going in the wrong direction as they lose at home to lowly Plymouth 0 - 1, just 2 points from their last 5 matches see MK Don's teetering just above the drop zone

Jon-Paul Pittman came off the bench at 75 minutes, as 10 man Torquay held on for a 1 - 1 draw at Eastleigh in the English National League. Torquay are 1 point away from safety, but 3 draws, a win and a loss in their last 5 has not generated the points they need to escape yet

Finally today, Kenny Saief never got off the bench as #4 Gent visited #3 Anderlecht, losing 1 - 0 in Belgium's Jupiler League. Both teams retain their positions

WEDNESDAY

DeAndre Yedlin (90) as Newcastle faced off with an EPL dominant Manchester City, and without tongue-in-cheek, played to a very good 0 - 1 loss. With possession swinging between 80 & 90% in City's favor the match was more of a practice field defense vs offense game. The goal really was a
result of a lapse in concentration by the Newcastle defense, just once and just momentarily - enough for City to make you pay

GK Danny Rogers resumed his normal position on the bench as Aberdeen beat Partick 1 - 0 to draw within 8 points of leaders Celtic in Scotland's Premier League

THURSDAY

No Matches

FRIDAY

Niall Mason (90) as Doncaster beats Rochdale (GK Brendon Moore on the bench) 2 - 0 in England's League One. 3 wins in a row for Doncaster who move up to 10th place. Rochdale are in trouble, 2nd from bottom

Keaton Parks remained on the bench as Benfica traveled to Setubal and draw 2 - 2 after being down 2 - 0 in the first half in Portugal League Cup (Group A). Benfica ended group play with 3 draws and in 2nd place, not enough to advance

SATURDAY

Jay Denny (90) as Newtown visited league leaders TNS and came back from 2 goals down to win 2 - 4 in Wales Premier League - great win to end the year

Geoff Cameron (90) as Stoke are trounced 5 - 0 by Chelsea in the English Premier League. Stoke on 20 points are just 2 points off the drop zone

Danny Williams played the final 8 minutes as Huddersfield were held scoreless at home to Burnley. 3 consecutive draws now for Huddersfield

DeAndre Yedlin (90 + yellow) as they battled visitors Brighton to a goalless draw in the EPL in a game that had 2 struggling teams looking for points

In England's Championship, Tim Ream (90) and Fulham traveled to Hull and battled to a 2 - 2 draw. Fulham has only lost once in their last 5

Lyndon Gooch came off the bench at 70 minutes as Sunderland found a way to win 0 - 1 at Nottingham Forest with Eric Lichaj (90). The win elevates Sunderland above the drop zone on GD, while Nottingham are in a deep funk with 3 losses and a draw in their last 4 outings

In what is best described as a tactical change, Cameron Carter-Vickers was totally ineffectual and replaced at 31 minutes of the first half as Sheffield United hosted Antonee Robinson (90 + yellow) ,and an Assist, and Bolton, losing this one 0 - 1. Bolton now 3rd from bottom, while Sheffield United
hang on to 6th place, but look a bit wobbly right now

Scunthorpe and Duane Holmes (90) will be happy to have escaped #3 Blackburn with a point in England's League One following a 2 - 2 draw. Scunthorpe move up to #4 as things get tighter at the top of the table

Gboly Ariyibi was an unused sub as 9 man MK Don's held on to a 1 - 0 lead for an hour over Peterborough in League One. MK Don's may have done enough to survive the drop - time will tell as the 2nd half of the season is well in play

GK Danny Rogers, was again on the bench as the backup keeper as Aberdeen were held at home, in a goalless affair, by Hearts in Scotland's Premier League. The draw did not help Aberdeen as they chase Celtic for the top spot.

In Scotland's League 2, Mason Robertson (90) Scored Peterhead's 4th Goal as they go on to beat League Leaders Montrose in an unlikely away win 2 - 6. The result puts Peterhead in 2nd place, 3 points behind Montrose, with 2 games in hand

Jon-Paul Pittman played the 2nd half as Torquay visited Boreham Wood in England's National League, losing 2 - 0. Torquay will have to go on an incredible run to avoid relegation into the obscurity of England's minnow leagues

Joshua Perez played the final few minutes in Livorno's 2 - 0 defeat of Prato in Italy's Serie C (Group A) match up. Livorno are now 12 points clear at the top of the table and look like a lock for Serie B action next season.

SUNDAY

GK Paul Rachubka came of the bench at the 73rd minute, presumably to replace an injured colleague, as Kerala Blasters suffered only their 2nd defeat of the season 1 - 3 at home to Bengaluru in India's ISL
