WEEKLY WRAP: 1.22 thru 1.28.2018: Chandler, Saief, Amon Provide The Spark

Statistically not the best week, but a good week nevertheless. A few player's shone and deserve to be part of the weekly shout out! Let's start with Romain Gall, who scored the winner (in a friendly) for Sundsvall. Shout out because he also scored a hatrick last week - that didn't make the list (my bad) so that's 4 goals in 2 games. Shout Out to Kenny Saief who played twice this week, getting a goal & an Assist for Anderlecht, although it must be said, he missed a PK that would have won one of the games. 2 Goalkeepers, Danny Rogers, who we have followed for a while at Aberdeen, got his opportunity when the starting keeper had to leave the game, a match that ultimately Aberdeen lost. But he was back with his first start a few days later and held his own in a 3 - 1 win. Finland is back with it's Suomen Cup, which is really just a pre-season competition. Goalkeeper Tim Murray, who was so good last year, just picked it up again, and gets the first of what I expect will be many clean sheets this coming season. Others of note; Alfredo Morales got an early goal in Germany, Jonathan Amon in Denmark with an assist, Dion Acoff with a goal for Valur in Iceland, and Mason Robertson scored yet again in Scotland

The injury bug hit again, with Emmanuel Sabbi and Danny Williams both leaving the field early - lets hope for a speedy recovery for our guys!

OK to the lists, first the short list

GOALS
Juan Torres - Belgium
Mason Robertson - Scotland
Romain Gall (3) - Sweden (last week)
Romain Gall - Sweden
Kenny Saief - Belgium
Alfredo Morales - Germany
Dion Acoff - Iceland

ASSISTS
Timothy Chandler - Germany
Jonathan Amon - Denmark
Kenny Saief - Belgium

SHUT OUTS
Tim Murray - Finland

.....and now the longer, more comprehensive list;

MONDAY

Shane O'Neill (60) returning from injury needs playing time, he didn't get off the bench this past weekend so Excelsior had him suit up for the Jong Excelsior squad today as they traveled to Jong Feyenoord and won 0 - 3 in the Reserve League

Kai Koreniuk (73) as Jong AZ draw 1 - 1 at home with Den Bosch in Netherlands Eerste Divisie. Jong AZ pull themselves a little further away from relegation - now 7 points clear of the drop

Indiana Vassilev (90) Callum Stretch on the bench as Aston Villa U18 traveled to Bury Town U18 in the FA Youth Cup match, with Bury Town winning 1 - 0. (Of note: only the second time in the history of Bury Football Club, that they have reached the 5th round of The FA Youth Cup)

Marcel Costly was on the bench as (then) 3Liga leaders Magdeburg visited bottom placed Erfurt, and as the soccer gods dictate, lost 3 - 1. Magdeburg are now in 2nd place 1 point behind Paderborn, with both teams looking to place for automatic promotion to 2Liga

Josh Perez off the bench at 80' in a 1 - 1 draw as Livorno visits Lucchese in Italy's Serie C (Group A) Livorno are 10 points clear at the top, but draws with bottom half of the table clubs is a way to let that lead slip.

TUESDAY

James Murphy (55) as Sheffield Wednesday U23 hosted Bolton U23 in England's PDL (North) with Bolton winning 1 - 2. Bolton have now remained uneaten since October, and have now taken over the league leadership (on GD) from Sheffield Wednesday, who are in the midst of a spell of bad form

Emmanuel Sabbi (35) exited the match early with an injury, as Hobro went on to win this friendly 2 - 1 over Skive, in an all Denmark affair

Juan Torres (90) Scored the 2nd Goal as Lokoren Reserves won 1 - 4 at Oostende Reserves in the 1st match of the Championship Round in the Beloften Reserve Pro League

GK Quentin Westberg (90 + yellow) and Auxerre traveled to Nantes and escaped with a 3 - 4 win in the Coupe de France. Auxerre had taken a 3 goal lead before giving up 3 and scrabbling for a 4th that gave them the win and a trip into the next round.

Kyle Scott (90) as Chelsea U23 hosted League One Oxford Utd. in the Checkatrade Trophy quarter finals, winning 3 - 0 and advancing to the semi's

In 2Liga in Germany, Alfredo Morales (66) as Ingolstadt were held scoreless at home by Sandhausen (who had none of their US contingent dressed for the match)

GK Kenneth Kronholm (90) as, joint league leaders, Kiel had trouble with Union Berlin and settled for a 2 - 2 draw at home in 2Liga

In the other 2Liga match, Jann George (90) and Regensburg traveled to Nurnberg ( who share the league top spot) and played to a 2 - 2 draw

In England's League One, Duane Holmes (90) and Scunthorpe were held to a 1 - 1 draw by Niall Mason (54) and Doncaster. Scunthorpe are 4 points off the automatic promotion slot, but its tight at the top and every point matters (so dropping 2 today was not a good thing)

Mason Robertson (90) Scored Peterhead's 2nd Goal, giving his team a chance to tie things up at the end of the match, unfortunately that didn't happen and Peterhead were beaten 2 - 3 by Scottish Championship side Dumbarton, and are out of the Scotland FA Cup, good run though from the League 2 side

WEDNESDAY

Romain Gall started for Sundsvall in a friendly with Ostersunds, and won 1 - 0 on a Goal Scored by Romain. (Romain Scored 3 goals last Saturday in a friendly at Sirius, so that's 4 Goals in 2 matches for Romain)

Marlon Fossey came off the bench at 58' for Fulham U23 as they traveled to Middlesbrough U23 in England's Premier League 2 (Group 2) and won 0 - 2. I believe that this was Marlon's 1st appearance this season (not 100% sure) Fulham rise to 2nd place , while Middlesbrough sit in shared 1st with 2 other teams.

Brendan Hines-Ike (90) as Orebro hosted Division 1, Rynninge and lost 0 - 1 -just pre-season but argh! not good

Terence Boyd started in a friendly between Darmstadt & Kaiserslautern - that was abandoned after a medical emergency involving K'Slautern's coach. We hope for a speedy recovery

Masami Okada (57) in Babelsberg 8 - 0 win over Brandenburger in an all German friendly

Aaron Schoenfeld remained on the bench as M.Tel Aviv traveled to M. Haifa in the Israel State Cup and lost 3 - 0 - so are now out of the competition

Kenny Saief (90) Scored the equalizing Goal for Anderlecht, and then missed a PK 3 minutes into ET that would have won the match over Waasland-Beveren in Belgium's Jupiler. The disappointing 2 - 2 draw keeps Anderlecht in 3rd place

Julian Green (90) as Furth visited Bielefeld in Germany's 2Liga and snagged a point (against a better team -always debatable) in goalless draw. That's 2 wins/2 draws/1 loss in their last 5 as they battle to get out of the red zone.

Kevin Lankford (81) as Heidenheim win 2 - 0 over Braunschweig in 2Liga. in a battle of teams heading in opposite directions

GK Danny Rogers made his debut for Aberdeen in Scotland's Premier League as their #1 keeper went down injured during a goalmouth scramble that saw the keeper hurt and a PK awarded to Rangers..,Unfortunately Danny Rogers first play for Aberdeen was to face a PK by Rangers at Ibrox (are you kidding me). The game ended 2 - 0 in favor of Rangers, but Danny got on the field after polishing wood all season.

THURSDAY

Rescheduled from yesterday, GK Brandon Austin (90) and Tottenham U23 held on to a 3 - 3 draw at home to Portugal's Benfica B (no Keaton Parks today) in the England Premier League International Cup (Group F) Looks like Tottenham U23 will advance out of the group stage, unfortunately Benfica B will not be joining them

Andrew Stadler played the 1st Half and Alex De John the 2nd, as newly promoted (to Allsvenskan) Dalkurd played its first friendly of the season at IK Frej (Superettan) and won 1 - 2

FRIDAY

When Alfredo Morales headed in Ingolstadt's first Goal after 3 minutes, expectations were high, then there was a 2nd goal, OK it's over!!! Hold on though, 3 unanswered goals by Regensburg and the match is turned on its head, as the home team find's a way to win, in Germany 2Liga. Jann George played the first half for Regensburg

In Germany 3Liga, Mario Rodriguez came off the bench at 66' mark, but Sonnenhof were already 2 goals in arrears, and Mario could not change that at Sonnenhof fall 2 - 0 at Zwickau. 3 loses in their last 4 and Sonnenhof look to be out of contention in the promotion race...

In France Ligue 2, GK Quentin Westberg remained on the bench as Auxerre saved a point at home with a 90 +5 goal to tie things up a 1 - 1 with visitors Paris FC. With 2 wins, 2 draws and a loss in their last 5, Auxerre seem to have pulled themselves away from an end of season scrap to survive...will have to wait and see

In Netherlands Eerste Divisie, Telstar and Andrija Novakovich (subbed at 90 +) managed a 2 - 1 win over visitors Jong AZ and Kai Koreniuk (73). The win leaves Telstar in 4th place - 4 points behind 3rd place Sittard. Jong AZ are 7 points clear of relegation and last place Jong Utrecht (only 1 team is relegated)

In an excellent result for Frankfurt, Timothy Chandler (90) is credited with the Assist on the first Goal as they go on to beat M'Gladbach 2 - 0 in Bundesliga and move into 2nd place. M'Gladbach drop to 6th (on GD - tied with 4 other teams)

SATURDAY

Daniel Stevens (90) as GrIFK traveled to JJK and lost 2 - 0 in Finland's Suomen Cup (Group C)

WEEKLY WRAP: 1.8 through 1.14.2018: All the World's a Friendly Week!

So the Winter Break is winding down in a lot of countries, and that means the friendlies season picks up as clubs start to integrate new players and look to get fitness back on track. Although their are still quite a few more friendlies scheduled, next week will will start to see a restart, and the run to glory, start up again

This week though had some fun stuff.  Josh Sargent played twice for Bremen II and notched an assist in the first and a goal in the other..I like to think that this portends for the future, and another Pulisic rapid rise scenario. Kevin Lankford, who has a little more experience in Germany than Josh, managed 2 matches and scored in each. Mario Rodriguez took advantage of the break getting 2 matches in this week and scoring in one, while Jordan Siebatcheu got back on track and scored Riems 2nd Goal in France Ligue 1. Keaton Parks also became a provider, as he was credited with the assist on Benfica B's 3rd goal.  Not to be left out Goal-keeper Mike Lansing made his senior team debut for Aalborg and got a clean sheet for the record as he kept Randers at bay in an all Danish friendly
