TRANSFER: South Carolina's Conor Agnew to N.Ireland's Derry City

Conor Agnew (23 y/o) a Mid-Fielder from Fort Mill, South Carolina who's last team was Puerto Rico FC in NASL has joined Derry City in the Republic of Ireland's Premier League. Derry City ended 4th last season.

The club has brought in 5 new players, of which Conor is one, following a trial "just prior to the end of the season" saying
“He was here on trial and he is a dynamic mid field player who offers a different type of play to what we currently have and I think it will work well for us.”
Conor came up through the NC State Warriors and joined Charlotte 49ers before joining PR FC

Let's hope it all works out well for Conor in the coming season

WEEKLY WRAP: 11.20 thru 11.26.2017: Young Guns Still Out-Performing their Elders

Like the weather, cloudy week, with a few bright spots. Let's see, we had Terence Boyd score twice for Darmstadt, Jonathan Amon started and scored his first goal in Denmark, Julian Green back on the scoreboard and Matt Miazga heads home late in the Netherlands. Royal Fennell, who captained Hallescher until his injury, made the bench for the first time since the middle of August, and Kenny Saief got his first minutes after returning from injury, remember his last action was for the USMNT in July.

Most of the rest is kinda' blah. Players subbed in and out or not making their 18. We lost 3 teams in the Europa League, Hertha, Vitesse & M. Tel Aviv - but we did have some teams advance (or qualify) in the junior competitions, Tottenham U19, Ajax U19, Benfica B and PSG II all having a good week. It seems to be a trend that our young gun's are having more success than our senior players.

And then.....the much hyped Christian Pulisic/Dortmund vs Weston McKennie/Schalke match. I like both players, but the difference in quality between the two is quite apparent. Weston was ineffectual and replaced in the 1st half (hopefully his confidence will survive that) Christian was busy running around for the whole game and certainly had a hand in the first Dortmund goal. SO what did we learn? Weston is probably a season away from being a regular starter, he will get his chances and he must take them, for me USMNT remains a question mark. Christian is a starter and will continue to be, in one of the worlds best leagues and will also be the feature of USMNT for the next 5 years leading up to the WC. (nothing new here) But coaches need to recognize that Christian needs to be placed in the right position for him to truly benefit whatever team he is playing for. Finally - what a game!! I can't remember enjoying a match so much for many years - classic.

OK enough meandering, to the lists;

First the short list ..........

GOALS

Ian Claus (2) - Germany

.....and the longer more comprehensive listing

MONDAY

TUESDAY

GK Brandon Austin (90) for Tottenham U19 as they beat Dortmund U19 1 - 3 in the UEFA Youth League. Unfortunately, Brandon had a "Horvath Style" howler allowing Dortmund's goal in the first half - but he did settle down and have an OK match after that

Serginio Dest (90) as Ajax U19 faced off with Poland's Legia U19 in UEFA Youth League (Play-off) and will advance to the next round - despite losing today 0 - 2, winning 4 - 3 over the 2 game series

In the Premier League International Cup (Group F) Keaton Parks (90 + Yellow) as Benfica B visited West Ham U23 and won 0 - 2. Benfica B will visit Tottenham U23 next to decide 2nd place in the group. Currently Tottenham are in that position on GD

In England's Championship, new Sunderland coach, Chris Coleman gave Lyndon Gooch (63) the start as they traveled to Aston Villa. Unfortunately the result was another loss, this time 2 - 1

Nottingham Forest and Eric Lichaj (90) won their home match against Norwich 1 - 0 and moved up to 7th place

In a shootout in Sheffield, Sheffield United and Cameron Carter-Vickers (58) came up short as Tim Ream (90) Luca de la Torre (in 18) and Fulham win 4 - 5. The loss dropped the leaders down to 3rd place (out of automatic promotion)

FRIDAY

Haji Wright off the bench at 76' as Sandhausen lose 1 - 2 at home to Heidenheim in Germany 2Liga. Ken Gipson remained on the bench for Sandhausen. Kevin Lankford did not make Heidenheim's 18 today. Sandhausen now have lost 3 of their last 4

Terence Boyd (86) Scored 2 Goals, but that was not enough as Darmstadt gave up a 90 +5 own goal and settled for a 3 - 3 draw at Union Berlin in Germany 2Liga. After what looked like a great pre-season Terence has only made the team 4 times (League) and 3 of those were as a sub, so excellent
showing on Terence's part today

Perry Kitchen (90) as Randers fall 0 - 2 at home to Sonderjyske in Denmark's Superliga.

Devann Yao (14) as Meppen are held to a 1 - 1 draw with Sonnenhof and Joe Gyau (90 + yellow) in Germany 3Liga

Ian Claus (90) Scored Twice as Süderelbe had little trouble with Rugenbergen winning 3 - 1 also in Oberliga (Hamburg)

In France Ligue 2, Jordan Siebatcheu (90) as Reims traveled to AC Ajaccio and won 0 - 1 with an ET goal. Riems are 4 points clear at the top of the table. Next up Auxerre

Auxerre, who had GK Quentin Westberg as their backup keeper today, gave up a 90 + 3 goal, to draw 1 - 1 at home with Nancy in Ligue 2

In Netherlands Eerste Divisie, Kai Koreniuk went 75' as Jong AZ lost 3 - 2 at Dordrecht. Jong AZ have hit a bad patch as they have now lost 4 of their last 5

Maurits De Baar continues to make the first team roster, today remaining on the bench as Waalwijk win 2 - 1 over FC Oss in Eerste Divisie, that's 2 in a row for Waalwijk

Kenny Saief (15) played the last 15 minutes of Gent's game. This was Kenny's first minutes in the senior squad since May and his first appearance since the USA/Ghana match in July. Good to see him back from injury. Gent really didn't need him today as they easily won 3 - 1 over Mouscron in Belgium's Jupiler League. Gent has won 4 of their last 5 and risen to 6th place in the league

Jay Denny (90) as Newtown fall 3 - 0 at Aberystwyth in Wales Premier League. After an awful start Newtown fought their way off the bottom of the table, so today's loss is a bit of a set back for their revival (after winning 2 straight)

SATURDAY

Bryan Gaul (90) as Elversberg drop 3 points at home in a 0 - 2 defeat by Mannheim in Regionalliga (Südwest)

Player/Coach Fabian Hurzeller (58) as Pipinsreid fall 1 - 3 at home to Eichstätt in Regionalliga (Bayern)

Kevin Olali (90) in Morlautern's 1 - 1 draw at home to FV Engers in Oberliga (Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar)

GK Malcolm Little (90) gave up an early goal for Dudenhofen, but that's all Trier needed to win, as Dudenhofen fall 0 - 1 in Oberliga (Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar)

Kyrian Nwabueze (90 + yellow) Scored Gorica's 1st Goal, in a match that ended 2 - 2 as Gorica could not hold on at home in Slovenia Prva Liga

John Brooks (70) in Wolfsburg's 2 - 1 loss at Augsburg in Germany's Bundesliga (possible injury??)

Caleb Stanko gets 11 minutes for Freiburg as they win 2 - 1 at home over Mainz in Bundesliga

So the anticipated Christian Pulisic (90) v Weston McKennie (33 + yellow) in the biggest rivalry in German Football, was kind of a fizzle. Weston McKennie came off early, after the Schalke mid-field was over-run by Dortmund, and ineffectual. Christian was pretty active, and was involved in the set up of the first goal. Certainly a fun match to watch if you were not invested in either team, as Dortmund and Schalke play to a 4 - 4 draw in Bundesliga with Dortmund giving up an impressive 4 - 0 first half lead

Oh My! what a bad day in Newcastle. DeAndre Yedlin (90) scored an OG and Newcastle fall 0 - 3 to Watford. Newcastle has now lost their last 4 matches and slipped down to 13th place (just 4 points above the red zone). The numbers tell the tale for Newcastle, scored 1 goal given up 8 goals in this losing run

Lyndon Gooch remained on the bench as Sunderland win 0 - 2 at Burton in England's Championship. This was only Sunderland's 2nd win of the season and new coach Chris Coleman's first

Antonee Robinson (90) as last place Bolton are crushed 5 - 1 at #1Wolves in the Championship

GK Brendon Moore was backup keeper again as Rochdale wins 2 - 0 over Peterborough in League One

Juan Torres remained on the bench as (10 man) Lokoren traveled to St. Truiden in Belgium's Jupiler League and came away with a point in a goalless draw

Indiana Vassilev (90) Callum Stretch (10) as Aston Villa U18 lose 2 - 1 at Reading U18 in England's U18 Premier League.

Bobby Wood (82) as Hamburg beat Hoffenheim 3 - 0 in Germany's Bundesliga

Matt Miazga (90) Headed in Vitesse First Goal at 87th minute, as they go on to beat 10 man Den Haag in Netherlands Eredivisie

Danny Williams (90) as Huddersfield lose 1 - 2 at home to Manchester City in the EPL. Manchester City remain unbeaten this season, Huddersfield with 2 straight loses are firmly mid-table

Kai Celestin (48) as CD Sariñena hosted Robres in Spain's Tercera Division (Group 17). CD Sariñena has now dropped the last 2 matches and slipped to 8th place

John Neeskens came off the bench for Santaboia as they are held to a goalless draw by Espanyol B in Tercera Division (Group 5). In fairness Espanyol B are runaway leaders of the league, with no loses, so a pretty good result for Santaboia

Joe Efford (70) in Ergotelis 4 - 0 loss at Doxa Dramas in Greece Football League. Ergotelis just 2 points from first 5 matches.

Stefan Antonijevic made a cameo appearance as Lillestrom visited Sandefjord in Norway's Eliteserien winning 1 - 3.

GK Ethan Horvath was back-up keeper again for Club Brugge as they came from behind twice to beat Waregem 3 - 2 and maintain their lead of Belgium's Jupiler League

Keaton Parks was in the 18 for Benfica, but remained on the bench as they destroyed Setubal 6 - 0 in Portugal's Primeira Liga, and moved into 3rd place. A little disappointed that the Benfica coach went with senior players as sub's late in the game. But I am sure that Keaton will get his chances, and take advantage when he does.

November 19, 2017

WEEKLY WRAP: 11.13 thru 11.19.2017: American Young Guns Blazing!!

What a memorable week! What started out slowly ended with a thunderclap as young Americans assaulted the top division of Europe. It felt like every other match had a debut of some kind going on, let me explain. First: Young Keaton Parks, who has been scrambling up the pro ladder , got his senior squad debut at Portuguese giant's Benfica, and showed he can hold his own at the highest level. Second: Shaq Moore got his senior squad start for Levante in Spain's La Liga. Shaq has powered through the academies, B teams etc. in Spain to reach the rarefied air of Spain, a feat not reached by only a few Americans over the years. Third: In Belgium's Jupiler, 18 y/o mid-fielder Juan Torres made his senior squad debut for Lokeren, after being omitted from the squad or sitting on the bench he got his chance this week, and played the full 90 minutes. Finally a shout out for Jonathan Amon who made his 2nd straight appearance in Nordsjaelland's senior squad in Denmark's Superliga. While I am writing, I see that ESPN are reporting that Timothy Weah is also about to break into PSG's senior squad (although I have a few reservation about this, considering the powerhouse names at his position - Neymar etc). These are my headliners, but there was more going on with our guys this week. Cameron Carter-Vickers and DeAndre Yedlin both had fantastic assists for their teams, while young goal-keepers Jonathan Klinsmann and Brady Scott both kept clean sheets in their games. Gunning for goals, in Germany Shaft Brewer scored a minute after coming off the bench, in the Netherlands Kai Koreniuk scored the winning goal in extra time. It does not stop there, if you have any doubts about the future in US Soccer? Weston McKennie had maybe his best performance for Schalke, Joshua Perez continues to dazzle in Italy, Emmanuel Sabbi is holding his own in Denmark while relative newcomers, like 17 y/o New Yorker, Antonio Iacovelli is in Italy battling for a place with Cesena.

*** I know that there are even more young Americans with big clubs (eg: McKenzie Gaines & Maki Tall et.al) - today's examples are taken from players that appeared this week***

OK enough, my excitement for the future has the better of me.....to the lists

It's never easy visiting Manchester United at Old Trafford, but for just a little while Newcastle had the lead, off of a DeAndre Yedlin (90) Assist...then the inevitable, 4 goals without a response and the Red's win 4 - 1. Worrying for Newcastle, more, 3 straight losses!!

Tim Ream (90) Luca de la Torre (26) as Fulham could only manage a 1 - 1 draw at home against Derby in England's Championship - 2draws 3 losses in their last 5, Fulham need to improve to ensure safety

The biggest news of the day is that US Player Keaton Parks (21) debuted for Benfica's senior squad in their 2 - 0 Taca de Portugal cup match against Setubal. Keaton has been climbing through the ranks in Portugal, and his reward came today. By the out-cry on forums and social media, I expect that he will get a call up for the national team, given some playing time at the top level. Congrats to Keaton though

WEEKLY WRAP: 11.6 thru 11.12.2017: International Break, Gives me a Break, but There is still Good Stuff in the Lower Leagues

So here we are in the midst of an "international break". Matches are few and far between and limited to lower leagues and friendlies, so don't expect to much detail here this week.

I am starting today with our goal-scoring pair in Slovenia. I have made comment about them before, but it certainly needs repeating. Kyrian Nwabueze at Gorica and Theo (aka Sachem) Wilson at Krka both scored again this week, that's 4 times this season that they both hit the nets together. Theo leads Krka in scoring (7) and Kyrian has scored 4 goals in his 7 matches (3 League / 1 friendly) puts him 2nd in total goals. Great stuff guy's - keep it up

We had 2 players with 2 goals this week, Gboly Ariyibi for MK Dons in England and Maki Tall got 2 in a wipe out cup match (0 - 8 scoreline) and Jordan Siebatcheu continues to score freely in France, where he has 6 goals in 13 appearances. (He had 10 goals for the season last season for Chateauroux in the lower, National League)

A few other notes of interest this week: Young USA Keeper Gabriel Rosario made the bench for the 2nd straight week for Reading U23 (Gabriel is 17 years old). Louis Bennett continues to be a first team choice at Vyskov in the Czech Republic. Ander Egiluz and Khai Celestin both are representing their clubs as regulars in Spain's Tercera, picking up the flag as Shaq Moore and Mukwelle Akale move up to higher the higher Spanish leagues.

OK so not that much to read this week, but still here is the short list......

Theo Wilson - Slovenia

Note: Reading U23 were the only U23 team in the group and although they did not win a match the 3 matches were settled G1 by PK's, G2 by 1 goal, G3 by 2 goals in a 12 goal game. WEEKLY WRAP: 10.30 thru 11.5.2017: 10 Goals, 7 Assists & 4 Clean Sheets

This was a week full of action, so maybe save this report for next week as the international break kicks in again.
A few points from this week,  Andrew Stadler & Alex De John saw their team, Dalkurd promoted, as did Keeper Tim Murray with Honka. Finally Conor O'Brien and Start are promoted in Norway. Congratulations to players & clubs.
We had some debut's this week as well. Caleb Stanko made his Bundesliga debut, as did Jonathan Amon, for Nordsjaelland, in Denmark's Superliga, of note, Jonathan is only 18.
Back from injury this week, Kenny Saief appeared in a reserve game early in the week  and in the senior squad on Sunday. Keaton Parks, who took a pre-game knock a few weeks back was also on the field twice this week. Also as hinted last week, Jonathan Klinsmann made the trip for Hertha's Europa League match (bench) and the next day played for th reserve squad as he try's to regain fitness.
My Final shout out goes to young keeper Brandon Austin who helped Tottenham U23 play Real Madrid U23 (UEFA Youth League (Group H))  to 1 win & 1 draw in their home/away, something that really should be of note going forward in his career.
OK enough talk.......
