WEEKLY WRAP: 12.4 through 12.9.2017: Weather Takes its Toll - But Still Goals

This weeks schedule was decimated by bad weather in Europe, primarily in the lower leagues, but noticeable even in the bigger matches. So your reading time will be less (and its good practice for me prior to the Winter break).

The shout-outs are not all positive this week, but with the reduced match's the negatives stick out a little more. We lost our Europa League teams, M.Tel Aviv, Hertha and Vitesse, but all played well in their final competition outings, with GK Jonathan Klinsmann perhaps overshadowing the other US players, with a late game saving PK save, retaining Hertha's 1 - 1 draw. On the other side of the coin, the usually reliable PK taker Andrija Novakovich, missed a PK that would have given Telstar the lead and maybe the win in the Netherlands. I don't usually follow U17 league matches, but in Saturday's B-Junior Bundesliga we had 5, yup! five, young US prospects on show in one game, and a goal from Justin Butler in the game. It was good to see Geoff Cameron play after a long time away following a concussion, welcome back Geoff, Finally in Denmark's Superliga, Jonathan Amon and Emanuel Sabbi were on opposite sides in an exciting match-up of #3 vs #4...young guns that will (IMHO) feature in the US national squads in the coming years.

Enough! to the listings, first the short listing........

Joe Efford (62) as Ergotelis hosted OFI Crete in Greece Football League. as they fall 2 - 4. Its been a shaky start to the season for Ergotelis with just 2 points from 6 matches, and deep into the red zone <Note> In Greece Football League the bottom 6 teams (in the 18 team league) are relegated

Shawn Barry remained on the bench as Korona traveled to Cracovia in Poland's Ekstraklasa and played to a a 2 - 2 draw. Korona now in 3rd place

Mukwelle Akale started for Villarreal C as they hosted CD Brunol in Spain's Tercera (Group 6) still coming back from injury, but good news that he started today

Joshua Perez went 90 as Livorno fall 3 - 0 at Viterbese in Italy Serie C Cup. One of those matches where Livorno absolutely dominated in all aspects, but goals.

In England's Checkatrade Trophy, Gboly Ariyibi (64) for MK Don's as they are throttled by Chelsea U23 0 - 4, with Kyle Scott (82 + yellow) and an Assist on the 1st goal

In the UCL, Dortmund and Christian Pulisic (90) visited Real Madrid and lost 3 - 2. I did not see the match, but reports indicate that Christian had a good outing.

THURSDAY

Europa League Day - a pretty good day for our guys, but all for naught.

M. Tel Aviv with Aaron Schoenfeld (90) won at Villarreal in Spain 0 - 1. They did not qualify for the next round, but a great win nevertheless

Hertha Berlin and debutante GK Jonathan Klinsmann draw 1 - 1 with Sweden's Ostersunds, with Jonathan saving a PK in the 86th minute to maintain the draw for his club. Not a bad debut. Hertha are also eliminated from the competition

Likewise, Matt Miazga (90) and Vitesse are also out of the competition after beating French power, Nice 1 - 0 ending their campaign with a (sole) win

FRIDAY

Terence Boyd (90) for Darmstadt as they fall 0 - 1 at Aue in Germany's 2Liga. Darmstadt fall into the bottom 3 in the league (only 2 points from last 5 matches)

In France Ligue 2, Auxerre, with GK Quentin Westberg on the bench, fall 1 - 2 at home to Chateauroux

Jordan Siebatcheu (89) as Reims continue their winning ways with a 1 - 2 victory at Niort. Reims are 7 points clear at the top (but have played 1 more match than 2nd place Nimes)

Tours didn't put Maki Tall on the pitch till the 88th minute, and lost 1 - 2 to Nancy, leaving them in last place well adrift of the teams above them

Maurits De Baar remained on the bench in an absolutely futile performance by Waalwijk in Netherlands Eerste Divisie. Down to 9 men in the last half an hour they get clobbered for 6 in a 6 - 0 away loss

Just to add to the misery today in the Netherlands, Andrija Novakovich (65) the usually reliable penalty taker, missed a PK that would have given Telstar the lead as they hosted FC Emmen in Eerste Divisie and played to a goalless draw. Both teams are on 27 points (6th & 7th)

Cameron Carter-Vickers remained on the bench as Sheffield United continued their spiral downturn, losing 1 - 2 to Bristol City (and surrendering 3rd place) in England's Championship. It was not that long ago that they led the division, but 1 point from 4 outings, in such a competitive league has them just hanging on to a top 6 place......

GK Danny Rogers will get his chance some-day, till then he must be content with back-up keeper role for Aberdeen, who today won 0 - 1 at Dundee, in Scotland's Premier League. Aberdeen are in 2nd place, just 4 points behind Celtic.

SATURDAY

Julian Green (90) as Furth defend home turf, winning 1 - 0 over Heidenheim in Germany 2Liga. Kevin Lankford got 10 minute in at the end of the game for Heidenheim

In A-Junior Bundesliga (Süd/Südwest) Timothy Tillman (74) and Bayern U19 forced a 1 - 1 draw with Karlsruher U19.

OK this is not a match that I would normally track, but its a fun set up that had the potential for 5 USYNT playing for their respective teams.

Malik Tillman (yes brother of) played the whole game (80) Justin Butler off the bench at 61' Scored the 2nd Goal, Jalen Hawkins came off the bench at 77' as Bayern Munich U17 hosted Ian Hoffman (off the bench at 53) Jeremiah Kasteleiner (who is not yet eligible for USYNT), remained on the bench and Karlsruhrer U17 winning 3 - 0 in B-Junior Bundesliga (Süd/Südwest)

So their you have it 5 USYNT prospects playing in one match

In Germany 3Liga, Bremen II and Isaiah Young (68) got a 75th minute goal to draw 2 - 2 at Meppen. 3 straight draws for Bremen II, have pulled them out of the red zone (on GD)

Joe Gyau (90) Scored Sonnenhof's 3rd Goal and Mario Rodriguez came off the bench at 77' as they visited Munster and won big 1 - 4 in 3Liga. Sonnenhof are tied 5th (6th on GD) but still have a job ahead to reach a promotion possibility

Juan Torres remained on the bench as Lokoren traveled to runaway league leaders Club Brugge, losing 3 - 1. Lokoren now perilously close to the relegation spot. For Club Brugge, GK Ethan Horvath is still MIA, we will have to see how his status play's out, but right now things must be horrid for him

Joshua Perez (15) and Livorno visited Carrarese in Italy's Serie C (Group A) and won 2 - 3. Livorno and Josh are now 10 points clear at the top of the table, which if it continues, will place them in Serie B next season...we just have to be patient

Keaton Parks (90) as Benfica B wins 2 - 1 over Sporting B in Portugal's Segunda Liga. Benfica B move up to 10th place. Keaton was in the 18 yesterday for the senior squad, but remained on the bench. Its good that he is getting playing time, even if its with the B team

GK Jonathan Klinsmann was the back-up keeper for Hertha today as they visited Augsburg and came away with a point on an ET (90 +1) goal in Bundesliga. Hertha need every point as their season has not gone to well so far, so this late gained point must have felt like a win

In Spain's La Liga, Shaq Moore started and played the first half as Levante fall 1 - 2 to Ath. Bilbao. This game's goals came from a PK and 2 OG.......?
