WEEKLY WRAP: 8.14 thru 8.20.2017: 17 Goals/2 Assists/1 Shut-Out Cap a Busy Week

This week stories make more news than goals etc. For those following, Australia's NPL has reached the end of the regular season. We had some success's Rochedale & Eric Ortega crowned as winners of the Brisbane Premier League and Logan Lightning are relegated. Avondale finished 3rd and enter the play-offs, while North Geelong are relegated in Victoria. In Tasmania, both Launceston City and Hobart Zebras made the play-offs. Valentine finished 5th (on GD) and miss the play-offs, but will be back next season in Northern New South Wales.

Germany's Bundesliga kicked off and of course Christian Pulisic stole the show for all Americans playing, with a goal and an assist in a 0 - 3 win. 2Liga, for me is more fun, and on Saturday night we had Americans playing in the top 3 teams in that league, Darmstadt, Sandhausen and Dusseldorf, great stuff. Haji Wright debuted for Sandhausen and scored In England young American Kyle Scott made the 18 for Chelsea's first team as they faced off with Tottenham. Emerson Hyndman returned from injury and played in a reserve match for Bournemouth on Friday. In Netherlands, Andrija Novakovich started in Telstar's season opener (and gets credit for an assist)

MONDAY

Matthew Olosunde (90) as Manchester United U23 traveled to Leicester City U23 and won 0 - 1 in England Premier League 2

Brian Span (90) for Mariehamn as they faced off with KuPS in Finland's Veikkausliiga and won 2 - 1, their first win in 5 attempts (4 points off of the final Europa league spot - possible?)

Weston McKennie had a reasonably good first outing for Schalke in DFB Pokal, but he only got 55 minutes, which IMHO seemed a little short, still first competitive game under his belt as Schalke go on to beat home team BFC Dynamo 0 - 2 and move on to the next round

Mix Diskerud was subbed out at 90+4 as Goteborg came from behind to beat Elfsborg 1 - 2 in Sweden's Allsvenskan for their 2nd straight win

Romain Gall (90) in Sundsvall 2 - 0 loss at Hacken in Sweden's Allsvenskan. Sundsvall 3rd from bottom (relegation play-off) at this point

Good to see GK Matt Pyzdrowski back in the 18 for Helsingborg - as backup keeper today he had to watch his team get pummeled 4 - 0 by IK Frej though. Helsingborg seem to have lost their mojo with 2 losses and a draw in their last 3, they have dropped to 4th place in Sweden's Superettan

Will Daniels (82) as Grindavik hosts Akranes and comes back twice, and pulls away in a 3 - 2 victory in Iceland Pepsideild. Grindavik jump up to 4th place with the win (tied 3rd) just 2 points out of 2nd place. This was Grindavik's 1st win in their last 5 attempts, that saw them fall from first place down to 7th.

Dion Acoff (66) for Valur as they faced off at KR in Iceland's Pepsideild. The game ended goalless, not a good result for league leaders Valur, who are now only 5 points clear at the top after today's draw and last weeks loss

TUESDAY

Fabian Hurzeler (90) as Pipinsried visit Unterfohring in Regionaliiga (Bayern) and win 0 - 1, for their first win of the early season

Theo Wilson Scored the winning goal in NK Krka 1 - 2 away win over Hotiza in the 1st round of the Slovenian Cup. This was Theo's 2nd goal this season, the first was in the 2 SNL league opener, where Krka lost 4 - 1

Julian Ceesay (90) in Gebenbach 4 - 1 loss at Ansbach in Oberliga (Bayern Nord)

Alassane Kane (75) in DJK Bamberg's goalless draw at home to Schweinfurt in Oberliga (Bayern Nord)

In the English Championship, Eric Lichaj remained on the bench as Nottingham Forest visited Barnsley and lost 2 - 1. Nottingham's first loss, Barnsley's first win

Antonee Robison remained on the bench for Bolton Wanderers as they traveled to Birmingham in a match that ended goalless. Bolton remain winless so far

Tim Ream went 90 for Fulham as they visited Leeds United in a goalless draw. Fulham have started the season with 3 straight draws, scoring only twice in 3 games

In the England Checkatrade Trophy (EFL Cup) Luton beat Tottenham U23 3 - 2 on penalties after the game ended 2 - 2. Luton scored on all their PK's while Tottenham missed on 2 of their 4. GK Brandon Austin was between the sticks for Tottenham

In Scotland's Challenge Cup, 2nd Division Peterhead traveled to traveled to First Division East Fife and won 0 - 2 with Mason Robertson going 68 and picking up a yellow card...on to the next round

Torquay are having a horrid early season, losing today 2 - 4 at home to Boreham Wood in the English National League. Jon-Paul Pittman lasted 63 minutes, as Torquay lost their 3rd straight game in 4 outings and have only 1 point on the season

WEDNESDAY

Dylan Autran (90 + yellow) as Mikkeli hosted Klubi 04 in Finland's Kakkonen (Group A) and won 3 - 1. Mikkeli pulled themselves 3 points clear of the red zone, while the loss by Klubi 04 halted their run for the top and keep them in 2nd place

In Germany's Junior Bundesliga (South) Maurice Malone went 90 as Augsburg U19 traveled to Stuttgart U19 and drew 2 - 2 after trailing 2 - 0

Lyndon Gooch has really fallen down the pecking order at Sunderland. Lyndon came off the bench at 84' as visitors Sunderland held on for a 1 - 1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday in England's Championship.

THURSDAY

Jordan Rouse (90) as TP-47 visited Hercules in Finland's Kakkonen (Group C ) and lost 3 - 2. TP-47 in 4th (on GD) despite the loss - would have jumped up to 2nd with a win

In Europa League Qualification M. Tel Aviv traveled to Austria to face Altach an won 0 - 1 in their first leg match. Aaron Schoenfeld went 72' picked up a yellow. Aaron was injured, had a split eyebrow, but returned to the game after treatment

In a case of top to bottom, Selfoss are well on the way to achieving that. with their latest loss 0 - 2 to Leiknir at home, they have lost 4 of their last 5 and are now in 9th place (4th from bottom) a long drop from 1st early in the season. JC Mack went 75 minutes in this one in Iceland's Inkasso-Deildin, where it looks a safe bet they will stay for another year

In another Europa League Qualifier - 1st Leg, GK Ethan Horvath got the Shut-out, but Club Brugge failed to score in their home leg against AEK form Greece. They will now have to visit AEK and win or score in a draw to advance.

FRIDAY

Happy to report that Emerson Hyndman (55) played for Bournemouth U21 today in a friendly at Brentford B. Emerson started, in his first match for sometime "eased in after injury" according to Carl Fletcher. Less important, Brentford won the game 2 - 0

Christian Eissele (90) Scored Jaro's only Goal in a 0 - 1 away win at OPS in Finland's Ykkonen. That's 3 straight wins for Jaro, who are still far below the chance of promotion. This is Christian's 9th goal for Jaro, placing him in 2nd place in the golden boot (tied with the USA's Felix De Bona) and 1 goal off the top spot

Speaking of Felix De Bona, he went 90, picked up a yellow, along with Etchu Tabe who only went 37 (??Injury??) as Ekenas traveled to TPS Turku and were thumped 4 - 0. Ekenas are in the spot below Jaro both teams should survive relegation though

In Denmark's Division 2 (Group 1) Anton Peterlin played the first half as B93 traveled to League Leaders Hvidovre and fall 2 - 1

In Germany 2Liga, Terence Boyd came off the bench at 69' as Darmstadt had little problem with St.Pauli winning 3 - 0 Missing again McKinzie Gaines - which although bothersome has not stopped Darmstadt from claiming the top spot in 2Liga (as of writing)

In Regionalliga (Sudwest) Joel Sonora (90+1) and Stuttgart were held to a goalless draw at home by Elversberg and Bryan Gaul (90) Stuttgart have yet to lose a game, but 1 win and 3 draws is not the way to fight for promotion

FSV Frankfurt ran into a truck today as they were beaten 6 - 0 by Waldorf in Regionalliga (Sudwest) Kouami Dalmeida came off the bench at 33 minutes to replace an injured teammate, while Javan Torre Howell remained on the bench and watched.

Also in France, Maki Tall (58) as Tours traveled to Niort and lost 2 - 1. Tours yet to gain a point in the early season may be feeling the heat just about now

Jordan Siebatcheu (77)  Scored Riems 3rd Goal as they hosted Bourg Peronnas in Ligue 2 and won 3 - 0. This was Jordan's 1st goal this season for Riems. Riems share the top spot, with maximum points and as yet, have not allowed a goal.

Ian-Prescott Claus (90 +1) Elson Pllumbi in 18/dnp as Süderelbe beat League Leaders Teutonia 2 - 0 in Oberliga (Hamburg)

In Netherlands Eredivisie, Matt Miazga played the last 7 minutes as Vitesse traveled to Roda and won 1 - 3 - only 2 games but Vitesse with 100% record is (of writing) top of the table, good start

season opener as they visited Eindhoven and draw 2 - 2 with Andrija getting the Assist on Telstar's 1st Goal

In Wales Premier League, Jay Denny (90 + yellow) as his new team Newton had to settle for a 1 - 1 draw against Druids. These 2 teams have exactly the same record/goals/goals against etc. Good to see veteran Jay Denny playing today

GK Will Dieterich (90) kept Haukar in the game despite going down 0 - 2 in the first half. Harrison Hanley (87) led the comeback with Haukar's opening goal, which opened the flood-gate to a 4 - 2 win, and extends the record to 7 matches unbeaten as Haukar move up to tied 3rd (4th on GD) and only 3 points off promotion from Inkasso-Deildin in Iceland

SATURDAY

Regular Season over in Australia's NPL (Tasmania) with Nick Groenewold Scoring Hobart Zebras 2nd Goal as they punished Northern Rangers 5 - 0. Both teams advance to the promotion play-offs

Launceston and Dylan Williams were on the wrong side of a thrashing in their last regular season game as they were embarrassed by runaway league leaders South Hobart 7 - 0. Still the good news is that a recent revival gave them enough points to creep into the last spot of the play-offs in NPL (Tasmania)

In Australia's Brisbane Premier League, Logan Lightning and Austin Dunker needed a win to survive relegation, unfortunately that did not happen - its obscurity for the Lightning next season

The good news out of Brisbane is that Rochedale and Erik Ortega finished the regular season with a good 2 - 0 win over #4 Mitchelton, and ended as the Brisbane Premier League Winners. There is still play-off system to go through, but I believe the title of league champs is officially theirs

In Germany's A Junior Bundesliga (Sudwest) Augsburg U19 and Maurice Malone (90) lost at home 2 - 3 to Frankfurt U19

In Japan's J-League, GK Daniel Schmidt (90) and Vegalta Sendai traveled to Albirex Niigata and won 1 - 2 continuing their revival with their 2nd straight league win

In Portugal's Segunda Liga, Keaton Parks (90) and Benfica B traveled to Famalicao earning an away point in a goalless draw. By all accounts Keaton had a good game, forcing a red card foul by the opposition and very nearly crafting a PK for Benfica B. As a team Benfica B needs to improve though

Everyone was intrigued with Haji Wright's loan to Sandhausen and whether splitting up the successful young pairing with Weston McKennie at Schalke would have a negative effect....well question answered. Haji Wright Scored Sandhausen's 3rd Goal after coming off the bench at 53' to make his 2Liga debut. Ken Gipson added to the US presence for the final 4 minutes of the game that had Sandhausen have little trouble with Dresden as the visitors get a 0 - 4 victory. (and a share of the league top spot)

Jerome Kiesewetter was not in Dusseldorf's squad today, but as their is a rather good piece of news this week I have added Dusseldorf's 2 - 0 win into the wrap..OK here is the news; In Germany 2Liga Americans are playing in the top 3 teams in the league. In fact only goal difference separates Sandhausen, Dusseldorf and Darmstadt

In Germany A Junior Bundesliga (Sudwest) Cory Anton came off early (33) as Hoffenheim won at Unterhaching 2 - 4 - no news on injury but I suspect this is the case

GK Tim Murray (90) and Honka dropped 2 points today in a 2 - 2 draw at home with Haka....in such a tight race at the top this was more like a loss than a draw as Honka drop from 1st to 2nd in Finland's Ykkonen

Last weekend 2 Americans scored for MiKi in Finland's Kakkonen (Group A) well today the same 2 Scored again. Isaac Kannah tried to lead a comeback as MiKi were 3 - 0 down at the half, Scoring at 54' Gerald Ben followed, when he Scored 10 minutes later. Christopher Thorsheim (82) in Nykobing 3 - 1 loss at HB Koge in Denmark Division 1

In England EPL, the thought of a Danny Williams v DeAndre Yedlin match-up was just that, a thought. With Danny Williams on the bench Huddersfield crafted a 1 - 0 win over Newcastle (DeAndre is still out injured) 2Teams in opposite positions Huddersfield 100% wins Newcastle 100% losses to start the season.

In Sweden Division 2 (Norrland) Leonard Taylor (90) Michael Mercado (90) and Bodens traveled to league leaders Skellefteå FFand lost this one 3 - 1. With some poor results over the past 5 or 6 weeks I think its safe to say there will be no promotion for Bodens this season

In Germany's Bundesliga, Timothy Chandler (90) and Frankfurt played to a goalless draw at Freiburg in their campaign opener

Daniel Stevens (78) and GrIFK continued their terrible form, losing 0 - 3 at home to 10 man KPV. GrIFK are 6 points from safety in Finland's Ykkonen, doesn't look good right now

Dylan Autran (90) and Mikkeli fall 1 - 2 at home to Kultsu in Kakkonen (Group A) Mikkeli 1 point above the drop zone, with 5 teams battling the red zone, in what looks like a terrific fight for survival in the coming weeks

At the top of Kakkonen (Group A) a battle for supremacy and promotion as 3 teams are all on 32 points including PEPO and GK Paul Blanchette (90) who had the opportunity to go clear today but slipped up in a 1 - 1 draw against Klubi 04, who are one of the other 3 teams vying for promotion

Devante Parker went 66 as St Polten traveled to RB Salzburg and were trounced 5 - 1 in Austria's Tipico Bundesliga. Just 1 point from 5 games for St Polten already 14 points behind the league leaders

In Sweden's Superettan, Alex De John came off the bench at 68' and Andrew Stadler at 85' as Dalkurd continue their great season, beating Norrby 0 - 3. Dalkurd are just 4 points off the top spot, and 9 points clear of 3rd place as they battle for promotion to Sweden's top tier

GK Kris Devaux was the backup keeper for Bryne today as they draw 1 - 1 at home with Nest-Sotra in Norway Division 2 (Group 2). Bryne maintain their top position in the league, but that advantage is now down to just 1 point.

Peter Fives (90) Sterling Hancock (90) and Nybro are held to a 1 - 1 draw at home by IFK Malmo in Sweden's Division 2 (Ostra Gotaland) Nybro still in trouble but improving are in the relegation play-off spot, a point or 2 will raise them from the red zone.

Aaron Schoenfeld came off the bench at 61' for M. Tel Aviv as they fall in their season opener 0 - 3 to B. Jerusalem. Not the start they were hoping for, but being in Euro competition may be taking its toll

GK Alex Horwath (90) and Brann got a bit of a wake up call from Viking before they woke and scored 3 unanswered goals winning this Norway Eliteserien match 2 - 4 and moving into 2nd place on the table
