WEEKLY WRAP: 1.29 thru 2.4.2018: Spain, Italy & Portugal Feature

We (USA) are not known for our players in Spain, Portugal & Italy. With a few exceptions we have not broken into the upper echelon in these countries. But over the past year we have slowly been infiltrating the lower leagues, and this week it was so evident that I have decided to give the Shout Out to these young guns learning their trade in Southern Europe. They may not join the few who realize first team play in La Liga or Serie A, but they are making themselves known to the 'selectors' of our young National teams, and other clubs in Europe through their own efforts.

In Spain, we have a number of young players, primarily in the Tercera (4th Tier) a sprawling league that covers 17 or so regions in Spain. As well as a few players in the (3rd tier) Segunda B. Mukwelle Akale at Villarreal and Shaq Moore at Levante are probably our best know representatives in Spain but just below them, players like Khai Celestin at CD Sariñena, Ander Egiluz at Basconia, Keeper Benjamin Machini & Akil Watts at RCD Mallorca with Ali Khatoun coming up at Leganes. Below that we have young phenom (my choice of words) Konrad de la Fuentes at Barcelona's Juvenil B along with Ben Lederman.

In Italy, Josh Perez at Livorno is probably the most well known, but a group of young players are starting to make their mark. Rafael Antonio Iacovelli moved from New York to Cesena in the Primavera, Chijioke David Aranotu is playing regularly for USD Scanzorosciate in Serie D where newcomer Jarrett Reeser is trying to break in to the Varese squad, as are other US young players across Italy.

In Portugal, everybody is familiar with Texas's Keaton Parks at Benfica, but he isn't the only one trying their talent in Portugal. Keeper CJ dos Santos & Armando Pelaez are also pushing for spots at Benfica. Jake Barros just debuted this weekend at Atletico Arco in the Campeonato de Portugal, Stephen Payne is at Varzim and Mark Withers just transferred to Salgueiros. Finally news broke this week that Keaton Parks older brother, Keeper, Kyle Parks has signed with SC Freamunde also in the Campeonato de Portugal

So there is my Shout Out - there are others in these countries, some I have identified, and some I probably have not - yet. But its exciting to see that the US has the players with talent to break into these and other countries that traditionally only look inward for their future talent.

WEEKLY WRAP: 10.30 thru 11.5.2017: 10 Goals, 7 Assists & 4 Clean Sheets

This was a week full of action, so maybe save this report for next week as the international break kicks in again.

We had some debut's this week as well. Caleb Stanko made his Bundesliga debut, as did Jonathan Amon, for Nordsjaelland, in Denmark's Superliga, of note, Jonathan is only 18.
Back from injury this week, Kenny Saief appeared in a reserve game early in the week  and in the senior squad on Sunday. Keaton Parks, who took a pre-game knock a few weeks back was also on the field twice this week. Also as hinted last week, Jonathan Klinsmann made the trip for Hertha's Europa League match (bench) and the next day played for th reserve squad as he try's to regain fitness.
My Final shout out goes to young keeper Brandon Austin who helped Tottenham U23 play Real Madrid U23 (UEFA Youth League (Group H))  to 1 win & 1 draw in their home/away, something that really should be of note going forward in his career.

WEEKLY WRAP: 9.25 thru 10.1.2017: Iceland Season Finished, Finland's Kakkonen has a Strange Ending

Lets start today with the leagues that are completed, Iceland and Finland (Kakkonen)
In Iceland Pepsideild: Valur (with Dion Acoff) finished at the top of the table and will represent Iceland in next seasons Champions League. Grindavik (with Will Daniels) finished 5th on GD.
In Iceland's Inkasso-deildin: Selfoss (with JC Mack) ended in 8th and Haukar (with GK Will Dieterich and Harrison Hanley) end just above Selfoss in 7th place.
In Division 2: Tindastoll (with Gregory Conrad and Tanner Sica) ended in 6th place.
Finally in Iceland Division 3:Throttur Vogar (with Shane Haley) finished in 2nd place and are Promoted. While Reynir (with Devonte Small) are Relegated

For Finland Kakkonen (the 2 top leagues are still in progress)
In Group A: PEPO (with GK Paul Blanchette) finished in 3rd place. Mikkelin Kissat (with Gerald Ben and Isaac Kannah) ended up 6th, while Mikkeli (with Dylan Autran) finished 9th. Kultsu (with GK Craig Hill) ended in the bottom 3 and are Relegated.
In Group B: BK-46 (with Jacob Bushue and Mitchel Lopez) ended in 4th place, while Kapa (with Neal Hetzel) finished in 7th)
In Group C: GBK (with Chris Corcoran, Lawrence Smith, Patrick Khouri and Jossimer Sanchez) finished in 2nd place, VIFK (with Ian Garrett) finished 3rd. TP-47 (with Jordan Rouse) finished 6th and finally OTP (with Timothy Wilson) were in last place and are Relegated
(NOTE: GBK ended the season with 46 points, 2 points more than the other 2nd place teams, who both had 44. Under some strange Finland FA (FFA) rules GBK were penalized 18 points, while Klubi 04 (one of the other 2nd finishers) were penalized 16 points, so the point totals were (made) even. Klubi 04 had a better GD, and the FFA ruled Klubi 04 as the best 2nd place team and they enter the play-offs. I guess if I was a GBK Fan I would be very annoyed at this situation)

We are very close to the end of the top tiers in Finland, and also the closure of the season in Sweden. We will be covering both (and others as they happen) in the coming weeks.

Javan Howell (90) as FSV Frankfurt traveled to Offenbach and lost 4 - 1 in Regionalliga (Südwest)

Mix Diskerud went 90 as Goteborg falls at AFC Eskilstuna 1 - 0 in Sweden's Allsvenskan. AFC who are close to relegation, have now won 2 straight after today's match and Orebro last week. Goteborg are just spiraling down the table without a win in their last 5 matches

Brendan Hines-Ike (90) as Orebro visited Sirius and came away with the win 3 - 4 in Allsvenskan. Starting GK Josh Wicks was left off of the Sirius squad completely this week, following last week, where he was on the bench as Sirius now make it 5 straight losses!!

Chad Barson (90) as Linkoping City traveled to IF Sylvia in Sweden's Division 2 (Sodra Svealand) and won 2 - 3. That's a remarkable 9 Straight Wins for the League Leaders who are 9 points clear at the top with 3 matches remaining - looking good for a shot at promotion

In England's EPL 2, Luca De La Torre (65) came back from injury to start for Fulham U23 as they were trounced at Blackburn U23 4 - 0. Fulham U23 only 1 win in 6 matches

Young GK Nicolas Hansen was the backup keeper for Everton U23 as they hosted Arsenal U23 and won 4 - 2 in EPL 2. Nicolas is just 18, so a nice nod to his talent by Everton

TUESDAY

In truth HJK are the #1 team and are 18 points ahead of the 2nd place team, but with just a few matches left every point counts. Mariehamn are 3 points out of a Euro spot - but the competition is tight only 6 points separate #2 from #6 (with 4 teams qualifying) next up for #6 Mariehamn is #5 SJK - not an easy task

Cameron Carter-Vickers went 90 as Sheffield United had no problem with Wolves, winning 2 - 0 in the English Championship. That's 4 wins out the last 5 matches and a 2nd place spot for Sheffield Utd.

(Sirius without GK Josh Wicks, again) Sirius now 6 straight league losses, have not won since August 23rd. Interestingly, Goteborg have also not won since August 23rd, but they have managed a couple of draws since then.

Michael Mercado (90) as Bodens are held scoreless as they hosted Pitea IF in Sweden's Division 2 (Norrland). Although mathematically possible, after drawing today Pitea IF are probably out of the running for promotion. Bodens are firmly mid-table

Süderelbe move into 4th place, but it looks like the league may be over for the season with Dassendorf at 10 wins in 10 Matches, already so far ahead...still theirs 24 matches left in the season - LOL

It's almost embarrassing, Andrija Novakovich (90) as Telstar are walloped 0 - 6 at home by Sittard in Netherlands Eerste Divisie. Telstar who, until today, had not lost all season. They made up for that today in a humbling way. Sittard move up to 2nd, Telstar drop to 14th
