WEEKLY WRAP: 11.20 thru 11.26.2017: Young Guns Still Out-Performing their Elders

Like the weather, cloudy week, with a few bright spots. Let's see, we had Terence Boyd score twice for Darmstadt, Jonathan Amon started and scored his first goal in Denmark, Julian Green back on the scoreboard and Matt Miazga heads home late in the Netherlands. Royal Fennell, who captained Hallescher until his injury, made the bench for the first time since the middle of August, and Kenny Saief got his first minutes after returning from injury, remember his last action was for the USMNT in July.

Most of the rest is kinda' blah. Players subbed in and out or not making their 18. We lost 3 teams in the Europa League, Hertha, Vitesse & M. Tel Aviv - but we did have some teams advance (or qualify) in the junior competitions, Tottenham U19, Ajax U19, Benfica B and PSG II all having a good week. It seems to be a trend that our young gun's are having more success than our senior players.

And then.....the much hyped Christian Pulisic/Dortmund vs Weston McKennie/Schalke match. I like both players, but the difference in quality between the two is quite apparent. Weston was ineffectual and replaced in the 1st half (hopefully his confidence will survive that) Christian was busy running around for the whole game and certainly had a hand in the first Dortmund goal. SO what did we learn? Weston is probably a season away from being a regular starter, he will get his chances and he must take them, for me USMNT remains a question mark. Christian is a starter and will continue to be, in one of the worlds best leagues and will also be the feature of USMNT for the next 5 years leading up to the WC. (nothing new here) But coaches need to recognize that Christian needs to be placed in the right position for him to truly benefit whatever team he is playing for. Finally - what a game!! I can't remember enjoying a match so much for many years - classic.

OK enough meandering, to the lists;

First the short list ..........

.....and the longer more comprehensive listing

GK Brandon Austin (90) for Tottenham U19 as they beat Dortmund U19 1 - 3 in the UEFA Youth League. Unfortunately, Brandon had a "Horvath Style" howler allowing Dortmund's goal in the first half - but he did settle down and have an OK match after that

Nottingham Forest and Eric Lichaj (90) won their home match against Norwich 1 - 0 and moved up to 7th place

In a shootout in Sheffield, Sheffield United and Cameron Carter-Vickers (58) came up short as Tim Ream (90) Luca de la Torre (in 18) and Fulham win 4 - 5. The loss dropped the leaders down to 3rd place (out of automatic promotion)

FRIDAY

Haji Wright off the bench at 76' as Sandhausen lose 1 - 2 at home to Heidenheim in Germany 2Liga. Ken Gipson remained on the bench for Sandhausen. Kevin Lankford did not make Heidenheim's 18 today. Sandhausen now have lost 3 of their last 4

Terence Boyd (86) Scored 2 Goals, but that was not enough as Darmstadt gave up a 90 +5 own goal and settled for a 3 - 3 draw at Union Berlin in Germany 2Liga. After what looked like a great pre-season Terence has only made the team 4 times (League) and 3 of those were as a sub, so excellent
showing on Terence's part today

Perry Kitchen (90) as Randers fall 0 - 2 at home to Sonderjyske in Denmark's Superliga.

Ian Claus (90) Scored Twice as Süderelbe had little trouble with Rugenbergen winning 3 - 1 also in Oberliga (Hamburg)

In Netherlands Eerste Divisie, Kai Koreniuk went 75' as Jong AZ lost 3 - 2 at Dordrecht. Jong AZ have hit a bad patch as they have now lost 4 of their last 5

Maurits De Baar continues to make the first team roster, today remaining on the bench as Waalwijk win 2 - 1 over FC Oss in Eerste Divisie, that's 2 in a row for Waalwijk

Kenny Saief (15) played the last 15 minutes of Gent's game. This was Kenny's first minutes in the senior squad since May and his first appearance since the USA/Ghana match in July. Good to see him back from injury. Gent really didn't need him today as they easily won 3 - 1 over Mouscron in Belgium's Jupiler League. Gent has won 4 of their last 5 and risen to 6th place in the league

Jay Denny (90) as Newtown fall 3 - 0 at Aberystwyth in Wales Premier League. After an awful start Newtown fought their way off the bottom of the table, so today's loss is a bit of a set back for their revival (after winning 2 straight)

Kevin Olali (90) in Morlautern's 1 - 1 draw at home to FV Engers in Oberliga (Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar)

GK Malcolm Little (90) gave up an early goal for Dudenhofen, but that's all Trier needed to win, as Dudenhofen fall 0 - 1 in Oberliga (Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar)

Kyrian Nwabueze (90 + yellow) Scored Gorica's 1st Goal, in a match that ended 2 - 2 as Gorica could not hold on at home in Slovenia Prva Liga

John Brooks (70) in Wolfsburg's 2 - 1 loss at Augsburg in Germany's Bundesliga (possible injury??)

Caleb Stanko gets 11 minutes for Freiburg as they win 2 - 1 at home over Mainz in Bundesliga

So the anticipated Christian Pulisic (90) v Weston McKennie (33 + yellow) in the biggest rivalry in German Football, was kind of a fizzle. Weston McKennie came off early, after the Schalke mid-field was over-run by Dortmund, and ineffectual. Christian was pretty active, and was involved in the set up of the first goal. Certainly a fun match to watch if you were not invested in either team, as Dortmund and Schalke play to a 4 - 4 draw in Bundesliga with Dortmund giving up an impressive 4 - 0 first half lead

Oh My! what a bad day in Newcastle. DeAndre Yedlin (90) scored an OG and Newcastle fall 0 - 3 to Watford. Newcastle has now lost their last 4 matches and slipped down to 13th place (just 4 points above the red zone). The numbers tell the tale for Newcastle, scored 1 goal given up 8 goals in this losing run

Lyndon Gooch remained on the bench as Sunderland win 0 - 2 at Burton in England's Championship. This was only Sunderland's 2nd win of the season and new coach Chris Coleman's first

Juan Torres remained on the bench as (10 man) Lokoren traveled to St. Truiden in Belgium's Jupiler League and came away with a point in a goalless draw

Matt Miazga (90) Headed in Vitesse First Goal at 87th minute, as they go on to beat 10 man Den Haag in Netherlands Eredivisie

Danny Williams (90) as Huddersfield lose 1 - 2 at home to Manchester City in the EPL. Manchester City remain unbeaten this season, Huddersfield with 2 straight loses are firmly mid-table

Kai Celestin (48) as CD Sariñena hosted Robres in Spain's Tercera Division (Group 17). CD Sariñena has now dropped the last 2 matches and slipped to 8th place

John Neeskens came off the bench for Santaboia as they are held to a goalless draw by Espanyol B in Tercera Division (Group 5). In fairness Espanyol B are runaway leaders of the league, with no loses, so a pretty good result for Santaboia

Stefan Antonijevic made a cameo appearance as Lillestrom visited Sandefjord in Norway's Eliteserien winning 1 - 3.

Keaton Parks was in the 18 for Benfica, but remained on the bench as they destroyed Setubal 6 - 0 in Portugal's Primeira Liga, and moved into 3rd place. A little disappointed that the Benfica coach went with senior players as sub's late in the game. But I am sure that Keaton will get his chances, and take advantage when he does.
