WEEKLY WRAP: 10.23 thru 10.29.2017: New Stars Shine and US Youth Players Outside of Germany

This week started slowly then built up to some fun things.
Of note this week, Andrija Novakovich continues to shine in the Netherlands with another goal and an assist. Duane Holmes back as super-sub scores the winner in a thrilling 3 - 2 win for Scunthorpe. Theo Wilson makes it 4 goals in the last 3 matches in Slovenia, and welcome Joe Efford, who has played 2 meaningful matches this past week, in the Greek Cup, where he scored on his debut and in the Greek Football League (2nd tier) for Ergotelis. Alfredo Morales needed 2 matches to get a goal and an assist, but that's cool and finally Joe Gyau and James Murphy both get their first league goals of the season.

Again, this week is riddled with young players trying to make their mark. As mentioned Joe Efford in Greece, then Kai Koreniuk and Maurits De Baar in Netherlands and Rafael Antonio Iacovelli in Italy as well as Ander Egiluz and Khai Celestin in Spain. The number of young Americans is increasing in Europe (and outside of Germany), which IMHO is great news. We are already seeing stars appear in the ranks of US youth, Tim Weah, Josh Sargent, Chris Durkin as examples, these players will be joined by lesser known players over the coming year or so, and will make up, what I believe, will be a USMNT like we have never seen before (well I can speculate right?)

Sweden's leagues will complete next week, while the rest of the major leagues will continue to battle it out, so see you all next weekend for the weekly wrap.

Here's the short list.........

GOALS
Alfredo Morales - Germany
Joe Efford - Greece
Marcel Costly - Germany
James Murphy - England
Joe Gyau - Germany
Jordan Siebatcheu - France

In a match that had #1 against #2 in Sweden's Superettan, Andrew Stadler (90) Alex De John (30) and Dalkurd traveled to Brommapojkarna, losing 1 - 0. So what does that mean for next season? Dalkurd would have taken the #1 spot with a win, and remain in 2nd place. With 2 matches left and, now, 4 points behind its unlikely that they will take the top spot. Dalkurd are 4 points ahead of 3rd place Trelleborgs where they will decide who is promoted automatically and who fills the playoff spot...my take is that the Superettan ends the way it is today.

Emerson Hyndman remained on the bench as Bournemouth won 3 - 1 over Middlesbrough in a Carabao Cup match. There are many fans of Emerson who would like to see him move on from Bournemouth, where it must be somewhat disheartening for him lacking playing time.

In Bundesliga

A worrying trend at Dortmund where Christian Pulisic (90) lose on the road to Hannover in Bundesliga. Dortmund are still top, but now only on GD from Bayern, with RB Leipzig knocking on the door. Dortmund has only managed 1 point from their last 3 matches

With Jonathan Klinsmann playing for the reserves yesterday, Hertha did not field any Americans today as they beat Bobby Wood (56) and Hamburg 2 - 1. Hamburg are in the Red Zone, with only 1 point from their last 5 matches

Fabian Johnson (19) came off the bench for M'Gladbach as traveled to Hoffenheim and won 1 - 3 with 2 goals in 5 minutes. The win moved M'Gladbach above Hoffenheim into 6th place

Over at Schalke, Weston McKennie (13) came off the bench for the home team as they faced off with John Brooks (90) and Wolfsburg in a match that ended even at 1 - 1. Notable here John Brooks first full match since his injury, a good sign for club and country. Wolfsburg have now drawn their last 6 matches. Schalke move up to 5th place (ahead of M'Gladbach on GD)

GK Malcolm Little gets his first start of the season for Dudenhofen and gets the Shut Oot as they have little trouble defeating Saar 05 Saarbrücken 3 - 0 in Oberliga (Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar)

Demarveay Sheron (90) captained Sandhausen II as they traveled to Backnang and lost 2 - 0 in Oberliga (Baden-Württemberg)

In England League One, Gboly Ariyibi (80) and MK Dons could not get anything going as they fall 2 - 0 at Bristol Rovers. Just 2 points from their last 5 matches has the Dons moving in the wrong direction

Niall Mason was an unused sub in Doncaster's 0 - 1 win at Bury. Doncaster have pulled themselves 3 point clear of the red zone

Duane Holmes (19) has had a shaky period at Scunthorpe lately, going from super sub scoring goals to starter and failing to find the mark. So of course Scunthorpe put him back as super sub, and of course Duane Scored the winning Goal as his team won a back and forth battle 2 - 3 at Oldham. Scunthorpe move up to 5th place

GK Brendan Moore, continued as back-up keeper for Rochdale as they pulled off a 1 - 1 draw at bottom club Plymouth

In Scotland's Premier League, GK Danny Rogers was the back-up keeper for Aberdeen as they won 2 - 1 over Ross County. Aberdeen are firmly in 2nd place and challenging Celtic this season (1 point behind the leaders). Baring injury I doubt Danny will get much playing time, with Aberdeen doing so well

In Sweden Division 1 (Sodra) Ryan Masch (90) as Skovde won 2 - 0 over Assyriska and nudged above the relegation zone on GD, with 1 match left to play next week. Conor O'Brien (74) as Start fall at home 0 - 1 to Elverum in Norway's OBOS-ligaen. You could call this a shock result as 2nd place Start are fighting for promotion, while away side Elverum are fighting for survival. The good news Start and Conor are PROMOTED and will play in Eliteserien next season (still 1 match to play)

In Netherlands Eredivisie, Matt Miazga (90 + yellow) as Vitesse lost only their 2nd match this season as they fall at home 2 - 4 to #1 PSV. Vitesse are in 4th place

Maurice Malone (82) Scored 2 Goals as Augsburg U19 hosted Fürth U19 and won with ease 5 - 2 in A-Junior Bundesliga (Süd/Südwest)

Nykopings have now won 5 straight, as they beat Sollentuna 2 - 1 in Sweden's Division 1 (Norra) with Eric Friedlander on the bench today

In Sweden Division 1 (Norra) Victor Mansaray (74 + yellow) Scored Umea's 2nd Goal as they went on to dismantle Enskede IK 7 - 1. Umea are in 4th place with 1 match remaining

In Belgium Jupiler League, GK Ethan Horvath was reduced to back-up keeper today as Club Brugge walloped St Truden 4 - 1 maintaining their 8 point lead at the top of the table. Evidently the coach is upset with Ethan over an error in their last game?

Christopher Thorsheim (90) as Nykøbing FC were held to a goalless draw by Esbjerg in Denmark's Division 1

George Fochive (90) as Viborg are held at home 2 - 2 by Thisted in Denmark Division 1

In Netherlands Eerste Divisie, Andrija Novakovich (90) continues to star, with a Goal and an Assist in Telstar's 4 - 0 blasting of Almere. That's 5 goals in the last 4 matches for Andrija, 7 goals this season so far. Telstar tied 3rd in the table (4th on GD)

Romain Gall (90) in Sundsvall 1 - 4 home defeat by Hammarby in Sweden's Allsvenskan. With 1 match left Sundsvall are in the red zone (GD) they travel to Goteborg (Mix Diskerud) next week. Jonkopings the side that is ahead of them play #3 Djurgarden who must get points to qualify for Europa League in a tight race for the 2 EL spots

Joe Efford played in his first league match, entering for the 2nd half as Ergotelis were held to a goalless draw in Greece Football League (2nd tier) by Kallithea in the opening match of the season (note: Ryan Palmbaum is on the roster of Kallithea, but did not dress today)

Khai Celestin entered at 61' as CD Sariñena traveled to Atletico Monzon and battled to a goalless draw in Spain's Tercera Division (Group 14)

Joshua Perez was an unused sub as Livorno won 3 - 0 at home over Pro Piacenza in Italy's Serie C (Group A)

Rubio Rubin (15) as Stabaek hold run-away league leaders Rosenborg to a goalless draw at Rosenborg in Norway Eliteserien

Theo Wilson Scored the 4th Goal as NK Krka won their 3rd straight 4 - 2 over NK Kranj. This was Theo's 4th goal in the last 3 league matches, giving him a team leading 6 goals

Shaq Moore came off the bench for his first senior squad league match for Levante at 72' in match of 2 halves. The first half belonged to Levante, the 2nd half to Eibar as the 2 Spanish La Liga teams settled for a 2 - 2 draw. Levante have now drawn 3 straight matches

Kyrian Nwabueze (85) in Gorica's 0 - 3 win at Aluminij in Slovenia's Prva liga. Gorica in 4th place, 1 point out of the final Europa League spot. Explain: 2 teams are way out in front (tied at 34 points, battling for UCL spot) 3 teams are battling for the remaining Europa League spot, Rudar are 3rd w/23 points , Gorica next w/22, and Domzale trailing behind w/19 points.

GK Zach Lubin was stated as being in 18 for today's match at Angelholms. Currently I have no info as to whether he played or not. The match ended in a 2 - 2 draw. With both of these teams in mid-table and only 1 more to play, they are not involved in any Pro/Rel - except #6 Ljunskile are hosting Mjalby who are chasing leaders Landskrona next week, in an absolutely fascinating scenario - Mjalby trail by 3 points, but have an equal GD / have won their last 5. Landskrona have lost 3 of their last 5 - including their last 2 straight. and host #4 Karlskrona - talk about a pick'em
